Make a Difference by Choosing Gobena Coffee

This year our Plucky Brand added a brand new line of wonderful coffees to our Shopify store. The Gobena brand and they have a wonderful story to tell. And Plucky is happy to share that story with you.

In the summer of 2007, Steve and Danae traveled to Ethiopia to adopt their little girl, Eva. The contrast in cultures was amazing. The Ethiopians they met lived in poverty, but were rich in their sense of community and in the closeness of their relationships.

Gobena (pronounced gō•bĭn•ŭh), a 70 year-old farmer, found Eva abandoned in the yard near his home. “Because she is God’s soul,” Gobena and his wife, Mulunesh, took care of the newborn baby for about a month.  During this time Gobena and Mulunesh realized that they would not be able to provide for Eva, so they traveled 150 miles to a police station to seek help.  At the police station they learned about adoption and realized that putting Eva in an orphanage to be adopted was the best option for the child.  Eva is now a permanent member of Steve and Danae’s family. She is truly a blessing from God and a constant reminder that there is always hope, as long as there are people who care.

Gobena’s sense of community inspired Steve and Danae to start this coffee ministry where 100% of the net profits were reinvested in the lives of orphan children throughout the world. In 2012, Lifesong accepted the challenge of growing Gobena… where each bag of coffee sold blesses the lives of children.

So invite some friends over for coffee and Go Make a Difference by choosing Gobena Coffee. http://sunburst-oranges-plus.myshopify.com/collections/gobena-org
Orphan Care & Adoption

Through a partnership with Lifesong for Orphans, Gobena is able to give back 100% of their profits to care for orphans and vulnerable children.  Which means every purchase you make is helping change a child’s life!

Foster Care

Gobeana supports The Forgotten Initiative by helping them use their coffee to raise money to mobilize and equip the Body of Christ to make a difference in the lives of agency workers, foster parents, vulnerable adults and children through service projects, mentoring and family support initiatives.

Use Oranges To Get Ready For Spring

Do you know there are foods that runners or athletes need to support good health and enhance their performance?
Supermarkets stock 30,000 to 50,000 items, yet every time we race up and down the aisles of the grocery store, we toss into our carts the same 10 to 15 foods. Which isn't such a bad thing, as long as you're taking home the best foods, ones that will keep you healthy, fuel peak performance, and easily cook up into lots of delicious meals.

We know that fresher foods give us more nutrition than foods that have set around on the grocery store shelf or in a warehouse.

At Sunburst Oranges that is never the case. We offer fresh hand-picked goodness right from our local area. Our citrus and nuts are grown in the richest soils of California in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley.

Runners should eat a small handful of almonds at least three to five times per week. Nuts, especially almonds, are an excellent source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that many runners fall short on because there are so few good food sources of it. Studies have shown that eating nuts several times per week lowers circulating cholesterol levels, particularly the artery-clogging LDL type, decreasing your risk for heart disease. And the form of vitamin E found in nuts, called gamma-tocopherol (a form not typically found in supplements), may also help protect against cancer.

Add almonds and other nuts to salads or pasta dishes, use as a topping for casseroles, or throw them into your bowl of hot cereal for extra crunch. Combine with chopped dried fruit, soy nuts, and chocolate bits for a healthy and tasty trail mix. Almond butter is perfect spread over whole-grain toast or on a whole-wheat tortilla, topped with raisins, and rolled up. Store all nuts in jars or zipper bags in a cool dry place away from sunlight and they'll keep for about two to four months. Storing them in the freezer will allow them to keep an extra month or two.

If runners eat enough oranges they should experience less muscle soreness after hard workouts such as downhill running. Why? Oranges supply over 100 percent of the DV for the antioxidant vitamin C, and a recent study from the University of North Carolina Greensboro showed that taking vitamin C supplements for two weeks prior to challenging arm exercises helped alleviate muscle soreness. This fruit's antioxidant powers also come from the compound herperidin found in the thin orange-colored layer of the fruit's skin (the zest). Herperidin has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels and high blood pressure as well.

Add orange sections to fruit and green salads, or use the orange juice and pulp for sauces to top chicken, pork, or fish. And to benefit from the antioxidant herperidin, use the orange zest in baking and cooking, as with Grilled Salmon. Select firm, heavy oranges, and store them in the fridge for up to three weeks. Orange zest can be stored dried in a glass jar for about a week if kept refrigerated.

Runner also deserve at least one indulgence, especially one you can feel so good about. Chocolate contains potent antioxidants called flavonols that can boost heart health. In one study, a group of soccer players had lower blood pressure and total cholesterol levels, and less artery-clogging LDL cholesterol after just two weeks of eating chocolate daily. Other research suggests that the chocolate flavonols ease inflammation and help prevent blood substances from becoming sticky, which lowers the risk of potential blood clots.

At Sunburst Oranges we have all three, Almonds, Oranges and Dark Chocolates. With the exception of the chocolates they were hand-picked from trees in our orchard or just down the road.

If you are looking for the perfect citrus for yourself or as a gift for a business associates, your family or friends? A quick visit to http://sunburstoranges.com can solve all of your fresh gift giving adventures. We sell only the finest selections and the freshest citrus you can buy.

Do You Know About the Battle of the Oranges?

Near the end of the first week of February the town of Ivrea in northern Italy holds their annual “Battle of the Oranges.”

Nearly 70 of the thousands of revelers who came to a small town in northern Italy for a traditional fruit battle incurred citrus-induced concussions.

About 7,000 revelers visited the Italian town of Ivrea, which kicked off three days of annual carnival festivities with its traditional “Battle of the Oranges.”

Carnival goers throw oranges at each other - the main event in the town's festival. The tradition is believed to date back to the overthrow of a tyrant in the Middle Ages.  Dressed-up in medieval costumes, some of the participants apparently got a little carried away while pelting each other with the oranges that had been specially delivered for the occasion from Sicily. The tradition is deeply rooted in the distant past. It is believed to celebrate a 12th century uprising against the local tyrant whose demands whipped a crowd of residents into a fury, resulting in his beheading at the hands of a young woman, according to the legend.

Some 70 people eventually dropped out of the citrus melee with concussions. An additional 28 proved unable deal with the local mulled wine, including a 12-year-old boy who fell into a coma after consuming too much alcohol, local newspaper La Stampa reported. Looking on the bright side, the number of casualties this year is about half that of 2015, when it reached 142, La Stampa noted.

The city once marked the occasion with confetti and harmless beans, but in the 19th century the celebration escalated, with the holiday turning into a full-scale orange free-for-all. The tradition was revived when young women started throwing citrus fruit from their balconies to attract the attention of the town’s eligible men.

A ticket allowing you to get dressed as a medieval warrior and hurl weighty fruit at other people costs nearly $9. As many as 7,000 tickets were sold, organizers reported, adding that more than 16,000 people had watched the juiced-up frenzy from the sidelines.

Orange-Sesame Noodles with Grilled Shrimp Salad Recipe

A generous splash of fresh-squeezed orange juice gives a lift to traditional peanut soba noodle salad. Leave off the shrimp if you want to make this vegetarian. Or top with grilled chicken strips, pork, or steak for other variations. You can find fresh soba noodles in the refrigerated produce section of any large grocery store.

Ingredients

1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
3 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
3 tablespoons peanut butter
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
2 teaspoons grated orange zest
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
10 ounce soba noodles or spaghetti
1 cup snow peas
1 carrot, cut into matchsticks
1 1/2 pounds large peeled and deveined shrimp
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

Directions

Combine the orange juice, soy sauce, peanut butter, sesame oil, ginger, orange zest and pepper ingredients in a large bowl.

Boil noodles according to package directions. Before draining, add snow peas and carrot. Let cook 30 seconds.

Drain pasta, peas, and carrot, and toss immediately with orange juice mixture. Set aside.

Brush shrimp with sesame oil, and grill over medium-hot coals 3 to 5 minutes.

Arrange pasta on serving plates, and top with shrimp.

Wine Note: Spicy foods marry well with Riesling wines. Here are a few wallet-friendly bottles that balance this savory dish: Blackstone Winery 2005 Monterey County Riesling, Covey Run 2005 Columbia Valley Dry Riesling, and Hardys Stamp of Australia 2005 Riesling Gewürztraminer.

Nothing Taste Better Or Is Better For You – Fresh Orange Juice

A glass of fresh squeezed orange juice is the very best way to start your day. Do you know how quick and easy it is to do?

How many oranges does it take to make a glass of orange juice? There are only three variables to be considered.
The size of the glass to fill (“normal” size is 8 oz.)
The variety of the orange(s)
The geographic region where the oranges are grown

The most popular orange for juicing is the Valencia. The Valencia orange is the most ideal piece of fruit to squeeze at home for several reasons:
About 5-6 medium size oranges will fill an 8 ounce glass.
You can squeeze a week’s worth, or more, of orange juice at a time.
Make certain to keep refrigerated & do not let the orange juice become warm (heat-spiked).
The Valencia orange juice will taste great with terrific color and flavor.

Why not use any variety of orange for my orange juice? The “other” popular orange is the Navel orange. The most famous Navel orange, worldwide, is the California Navel orange. But the California Navel orange is grown to be eaten as fresh whole fruit and not processed into juice. The flavor of Navel oranges can vary greatly among the different sub-varieties of Navel oranges now produced. In addition, the time of the season affects the flavor. The sugar to acid ratio (the determinant of the “sweetness & flavor” of the navel orange) can range from 8:1 to 25:1. The 8:1 ratio makes the Navel orange taste & flavor too sour and the 25:1 ratio makes the Navel orange too sweet, with a musty, over-ripe flavor.

Do you know if the oranges from your grocery store were grown in the USA? What does ‘oranges from another country’ mean to me? First , ‘from another country’ means the average consumer has never, in history, had so much selection for so many fruits and vegetables, available on a year-round basis. Second, stringent rules and regulations are in place, world-wide, to assure the safety and quality of food products. Sunburst’s sourcing has always and will follow the safest and ethical practices of supply for our customers, with any product we ever offer. Finally, let’s get back to the color of the glasses of Orange Juice.

Let’s Talk Jams and Jellies

We have some of the very best Jams you could ever ask for. We want you to know about the quality products so let’s talk about jams and jellies. Jams and jellies are spreads typically made from fruit, sugar, and pectin. Jelly is made with the juice of the fruit; jam uses the pulp of the fruit as well. Some vegetable jellies are also produced.

It is difficult to pinpoint when people first made a fruit spread. Ancient civilizations were known to set a variety of foods in the sun to dry in order to preserve them for later use. One of the first recorded mentions of jam making dates to the Crusades whose soldiers brought the process back from their journeys in the Middle East.

Preserving foods was a home-based operation until the nineteenth century. Even today, millions of people make fruit preserves in their own kitchens. Whether in the home kitchen or in a modern food processing plants, the procedure is essentially the same. Fruits are chopped and cooked with sugar and pectin until a gel is formed. The jam or jelly is then packed into sterilized jars.

Spoilage prevention is a major concern for both the home and the commercial jam producer. An important innovation in food preservation occurred in 1810. Nicolas Appert, a French confectioner, determined that by filling jars to the brim with food so that all air is expressed out and then placing the jars in boiling water would prevent spoilage.

In the early 1800s in the United States, the country was experiencing a surge westward. Of the many legendary characters to emerge during this period was John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. A nursery-man from western Pennsylvania, Chapman walked through the Midwest planting apple orchards. His purpose was to provide crops for the coming pioneers.

One of those pioneers was Jerome Smucker of Ohio who used Chapman's apples to open a cider mill in 1897. Within a few years, he was also making apple butter. Smucker blended the apple butter in a copper kettle over a wood stove. He and his wife ladled the apple butter into stoneware crocks. She then sold it to other housewives near their home in Wayne County, Ohio.

After World War II, food scientists developed the process of aseptic canning: heating the food and the jar or can separately. For sensitive foods such as fruits, this allowed for high-temperature flash cooking that preserved taste and nutritional value.

Lemons in Song and Stories

This week we are talking about lemons and now seems like a good time to look at the lighter side of this bright yellow fruit. So here we go what “lemon” songs are your favorites or that you have even heard of.

Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back - Meatloaf
The Lemon Song - Led Zeppelin
Lemon Tree - Peter Paul and Mary
Lemonade Girl - The Jellys
Oranges and Lemons - English Children's song

We all know that for whatever reason “Lemon” can refer to something that is a bad outcome or defective in nature. Life hands you lemons is used when a situation is undesirable. Why this reference is common has several origin stories.

Lemons are healthy fruits, rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, used in a myriad of wonderful products, from lemonade and lemon meringue pie to cleaning agents. So, why do we call bad cars lemons?

The Online Etymology Dictionary indicates that there are several possible origins for ‘lemon’ being used to refer to an inferior product. One possibility is that it came from early 20th century American slang, where a ‘lemon’ referred to "a person who is a loser, a simpleton," as a lemon. Another possibility is that the term originated from British pool hall slang, where a ‘lemon game’ was a game played by a hustler. It seems most likely that that the use of a ‘lemon’ as a bad car came from another British slang term from the early 1900’s in which “to hand someone a lemon” was "to pass off a sub-standard article as a good one.

A very disappointing investment. A lemon is an investment in which your expected return wasn't even close to being achieved, and more than likely ended up losing you some or all of the capital committed. Lemon investments can be associated with poor money management, economic factors, financial fraud or just plain bad luck.

Saying that lemons are a superfood is an understatement. Not only do they add abundant flavor to a variety of dishes, but they also boast a ton of health benefits. The flavonoids within the juice are said to contain antioxidants, which is why lemons are useful in treating so many ailments and conditions.

Lemon and Thyme Flavored Pork Meatballs

These simple meatballs are delicious - tender, moist, and tangy from the sauce. They're a lovely little window into the simple yet delicious and balanced food that Chez Panisse is known for, with a twist for palates jaded by heavy holiday food and too much richness.

Ingredients

1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 small yellow onion, finely diced
Extra-virgin olive oil
Salt
1 pound ground pork
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
4 tablespoons chopped fresh sage leaves
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Freshly ground black pepper

Lemon Thyme Sauce

1 1/2 cups chicken broth
3/4 cup dry white wine
1/2 cup fresh squeezed Sunburst lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
Zest the lemon, to garnish
Roughly chopped thyme, still on stems, to garnish

Directions

Put the milk and breadcrumbs in a small bowl and mix with a fork. When the crumbs have softened squeeze out the milk and discard it.

Gently sauté the onion in a little olive oil until it is soft but not colored. Season with a pinch of salt and set it aside to cool.

Combine in a medium bowl the pork, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, Parmesan, sage, thyme, cayenne, black pepper, and 1 teaspoon salt. Mix with hands thoroughly.

Shape the mixture into walnut-sized balls. This can be done several hours or even a day ahead.

To cook, heat a skillet large enough to hold all the meatballs in one uncrowded layer. Add a little olive oil. When the skillet is heated, add the meatballs, shaking the pan to keep them from sticking. Using tongs to turn so they brown evenly, cook the meatballs until they are no longer pink in the center and lightly browned on all sides. Remove from the pan to a plate and immediately make the sauce.

Remove meatballs from the pan, and deglaze it over medium heat with the chicken broth and wine. Simmer until reduced by at least a third. Add the lemon juice and thyme, then add the meatballs back in again as well.

Simmer until ready to serve - at least 10 minutes, but up to half an hour. Serve meatballs with the sauce poured over and garnished with lemon zest curls and thyme sprigs.

When Life Gives You Lemons, What Do You Make?

They have songs about Lemon Trees and many chefs sing the praises of the tangy taste and the zest it adds to your meals. Then of course there is the ever popular beverage of Lemonade. What comes to mind when we ask you about lemons? Do you know the old phrase… When life gives you lemons you need to make lemonade?

The health benefits of lemon include treatment of throat infections, indigestion, constipation, dental problems, and fever, internal bleeding, rheumatism, burns, obesity, respiratory disorders, cholera and high blood pressure, while it also benefits hair and skin care. Known for its therapeutic property since generations, lemon helps to strengthen your immune system, cleanse your stomach, and it is considered a blood purifier.

Lemon juice, especially, has several health benefits associated with it. It is well known as a useful treatment for kidney stones, reducing strokes and lowering body temperature. As a refreshing drink, lemonade helps you to stay calm and cool.

Your liver loves lemons: “The lemon is a wonderful stimulant to the liver and is a dissolvent of uric acid and other poisons, liquefies the bile,” says Jethro Kloss in his book Back to Eden. Fresh lemon juice added to a large glass of water in the morning is a great liver detoxifier.

Lemons are alkalizing for the body: Lemons are acidic to begin with but they are alkaline-forming on body fluids helping to restore balance to the body’s pH.

Lemons are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids that work against infections like the flu and colds.

Lemon juice helps to cure problems related to indigestion and constipation. Add a few drops of lemon on your dish, and it will aid in digestion. It acts as a blood purifier and a cleansing agent, so a good drink after lunch or dinner is fresh lemon soda, which is also called fresh lime soda in many places. The recipe is lemon juice, cold water, soda, salts and sugar/honey for sweetness. You can also add some mint leaves or crushed fennel seeds for added flavor. Drink this whenever you have a heavy lunch or dinner.

It's Always Lemonade Season... Now you'll always have lemons on hand! From lemonade to to your favorite recipes, purchase lemons for any occasion just by selecting the amount you need below. What About Black Tea Would You Like To Know

The American palate has certainly become used that typical strong black tea that can stand up to sweetener and cream or lots of ice. For a long time, the quality and variety of black tea wasn’t something that was highly regarded here in the United States. Mass production to meet the demand for tea was more important. But as consumers learn more about the world of tea, demand for premium, artisan, loose leaf teas are on the rise, and variety, freshness and flavor have become important distinguishing factors in choosing which black tea to sip.

When choosing a black tea to drink, remember that not all black teas taste the same. Just like with fine wine, there are so many variables that give individual black teas their own particular flavor profiles, including where it was grown, if it grew near other crops that affected its flavor (e.g. rose bushes or coffee plants), what kind of climate it grew in, if it was fertilized naturally or with chemicals, how long the leaves were allowed to oxidize when processed, what kind of heat treatment the leaves received to stop oxidization, and whether the leaves were left whole (orthodox) or cut into smaller pieces (non-orthodox) for packaging.

Generally, black tea is stronger, bolder and richer than green tea. A brewed black tea can range in color from amber to red to dark brown, and its flavor profile can range from savory to sweet, depending on how long it was oxidized and how it was it was heat processed. Black tea typically has more astringency and bitterness than green tea, but if brewed correctly it should be smooth and flavorful.

Some common traits used to describe the overall flavor profile of the black tea category include malty, smoky, brisk, earthy, spiced, nutty, metallic, citrus, caramel, leather, fruity, sweet and honey.

Brewing
The more delicate black teas, such as Darjeeling, should be steeped for 3 to 4 minutes. The same holds for broken leaf teas, which have more surface area and need less brewing time than whole leaves. Whole leaf black teas, and black teas that will be served with milk or lemon, should be steeped 4 to 5 minutes. Longer steeping times make the tea bitter (at this point, in the UK it is referred to as being "stewed"). When the tea has brewed long enough to suit the tastes of the drinker, it should be strained before serving.

Some “Did You Knows” About Tea

Here are some interesting facts about tea you've probably never heard about: from the place where tea bag was invented to the mosquito repellent found in its leaves.

Tea has been around for millennia. Through that time, the Chinese have drunk it for everything from hangover prevention to weight control and common cold reduction. Now, modern scientific research has given us a much better insight into how tea improves health and to what benefit.

Tea bags were invented in America in the early 1800s, and were initially used to hold samples of teas brought from India. Today, 96% of all cups of tea served around the world were made using teabags.

Here are five good reasons for not giving up tea, even if you don’t drink it - it helps to heal shaving cuts, eliminates bad odors when added to a foot bath, can be used to marinade meat, is a great fertilizer for roses, and is also good for cleaning floors.

You can’t have a cup without something to go with it: from cookies and English cucumber sandwiches to seafood accompanied by green tea in Japan, by way of spicy Indian meat dishes, and all-chocolate desserts.

Perfect when drunk steaming hot, tea is also one of the most thirst-quenching summer drinks when drunk cold, perhaps with ice, and possibly some lemon, lime or leaves of mint to add flavor.

After tourism, the cultivation of tea is India’s second largest industry. And India tea is the variety most commonly drunk the world over, despite the fact that it originally came from China.

Since tea contains high levels of antioxidants, it is not surprising that studies have found them in eye tissue. In fact, drinking tea can help to prevent the blindness caused by cataracts (the clouding of the lens inside the eye), said a 2001 study.

If you're looking to have cortisol levels drop back down to normal faster after a stressful event, a 2006 study suggested daily consumption of tea for six weeks will do just that (as compared to placebo). Cortisol is the stress hormone that contributes to belly fat and makes your skin age quicker. One recent study suggested four cups of tea per day may make your cortisol levels spike less.

Black Tea Recipe

Due to its bold flavor and its suitability for pairing with foods, black tea is the most popular type of tea in the United States. Many believe that this is due to black teas' bold flavors and relatively long shelf lives of black teas. In the East, black tea consumption is less common, and in China, black tea is known as "hong cha" or red tea due to the reddish color of its liquor or infusion. Consider using black teas in recipes.

Many black tea blends are flavored with fruit, flowers and / or spices. Classic flavored black tea blends include Earl Grey (which is flavored with bergamot essential oil or citrus flavor), Masala Chai (which is blended with various spices) and fruit- or flower-scented black teas (such as Rose Black Tea and Lichee Black Tea, both of which originated in China). In recent years, many tea companies have started to offer more exotic and non-traditional black tea blends. These may include flavors like chocolate or vanilla (often placing them in the category of dessert teas), wood or smoke (as found in teas like Lapsang Souchong and Russian Caravan), tropical fruits, warming spices and dried herbs (such as mint or lavender).

In addition to blended teas, black teas are also sold by their origin. These teas may be blends of teas from a particular region (such as a Darjeeling tea blend or an Assam tea blend) or they may be single-origin teas (such as a Darjeeling first flush black tea or Darjeeling second flush black tea from a single estate or a Keemun black tea from a particular farm).

Black Tea Flavor Profiles

Black teas tend to be bold and brisk (or astringent). The flavors of single-origin teas can be broadly described based on where they are from. Different tea origins produce different black tea flavor profiles due to their unique terroir.

Hong Kong Milk Tea

Hong Kong milk tea is also known as “pantyhose tea” or “silk stocking tea” because it is often brewed in a large tea sock that resembles pantyhose. It has a smooth, creamy texture thanks to the evaporated milk (or, if you opt for sweetened, condensed milk, it becomes beguilingly sweet and full flavored).

Ingredients

1 cup water
2 Tbsp. black tealeaves (preferably a bold Ceylon tea)
1 small (14-ounce) can sweetened, condensed milk, or 14 ounces evaporated milk, plus sugar (to taste)

Directions

Combine water and tea in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Bring to a low boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes.
Remove from heat. Stir in sweetened, condensed milk. Return to heat.
Return to a boil. Simmer for 3 more minutes.
Strain and serve hot or (optional) chill and serve over ice. Small glasses are ideal.

Benefits of Black Tea that You Might Not Know About

Have you ever heard people criticizing your choices in having caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee? Though over-indulging in anything will have negative consequences, having an extra cup of black tea might not be as bad as you might have imagined.

Personally I love my perfect cup of tea. It’s how I like to begin my day—not to help me wake up, but rather I like to enjoy a tasteful cup of bliss first thing in the morning. When it comes to herbal, green or black tea, different things suit different people and a doctor’s recommendation should never be overlooked, but for most of us, indulging in a cup or two of black tea might in fact be a healthy life choice, as some studies have shown.

Both green and black tea are made from a shrub called Camellia Sinesis, but with different processing methods. In addition to the leaves being withered, rolled and heated, black tea leaves are fermented before the final heating process.
