Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal With Citrus

Using The Power Of Citrus

Citrus is coming into season, and it’s the perfect time to stock up on Sunburst oranges and tangerines. As a general rule, I usually eat extra Sunburst navel oranges over the winter months.

After eating and cooking with your Sunburst citrus and before you toss those orange peels (or lemon, or grapefruit, tangerines or lime) into the garbage, place a couple pieces of peel in your garbage disposal, and run some water down the drain as you turn on the disposal.

The rough peels help to clean the blades, and the citrus oils do a fantastic job of naturally freshening your kitchen air.

Different garbage disposals have different power levels. Cutting your pieces of peel (or some folks call it rind) in to small chunks will not put too much strain on your disposal.

Here is a list of disposal Don’ts.

• Don’t grind glass, plastic, metal or even paper.

• Don’t grind anything combustible.

• Don’t pour grease, oil or fat into your garbage disposal or drain.

• Don’t use hot water when grinding food waste.

• Don’t grind extremely fibrous material like corn husks, celery stalks, onion skins, and artichokes.

• Don’t turn off the motor or water until grinding is completed.

• Don’t put too many potato peels down the garbage disposal

• Don’t grind large animal bones (beef, pork etc.).

• Avoid putting coffee grounds down the garbage disposal

• Don’t use harsh chemicals like bleach or drain cleaners.

The Healthy Aspects of Sunburst Navel Oranges

Did You Know?

Overall, oranges are among the most popular fruits worldwide, due to their unique, refreshing and sweet taste.

Also, because not only can they be found in great abundance and varieties, oranges have many important health benefits for the human body.  The navel orange, are also known by its scientific term citrus sinensis (the sweet orange), is one of the most popular of the orange tree varietals and also one of the most unique.

Oranges are round citrus fruits with finely-textured skins that are, of course, orange in color just like their pulpy flesh; the skin can vary in thickness from very thin to thick. Oranges usually range from approximately two to three inches in diameter.

Navel oranges are seedless, and once the peel is opened, the flesh inside is naturally very sweet and juicy.  Seen from outside, the blossom end of a navel orange looks like a human navel, which is how it acquired its name.  Inside, when a naval orange is broken or peeled, you can see a partially formed, undeveloped conjoined “twin” fruit on the blossom end.

The antioxidant vitamin C is the main nutritional component of navel oranges.  People all over the world drink orange juice from navel oranges daily as their source of vitamin C.  Vitamin C not only helps keeps our immune system strong, but it also helps the body absorb iron, works to help heal wounds, and studies have shown can even help prevent heart disease.  The human body does not naturally produce vitamin C on its own, so one of the best ways to get the right amount of this essential nutrient is to drink fresh squeezed juice from a navel orange or to eat it right from a fresh Sunburst orange.

Other nutrients in navel oranges are also known to help to prevent cancers, such as stomach and esophagus cancer.  The high fiber content in navel oranges can help improve cholesterol ratios in the body, which is important in controlling diabetes.
