More About Cara Cara Navel Oranges

The Cara Cara navel, or red-fleshed navel orange is an early-to-midseason navel orange believed to have developed as a cross between the Washington navel and the Brazilian Bahia navel.

Here at Sunburst Oranges for a kimited time we have Cara Cara Navel Oranges available.

Discovered at the Hacienda de Cara Cara in Valencia, Venezuela in 1976, the parentage is apparently uncertain enough to occasionally warrant the distinction of a mutation, with only the tree on which it was found, the Washington navel, being an accepted progenitor. Cara Caras did not enter the U.S consumer produce market until the late 1980s and were carried only by specialty markets for many years thereafter.

Cara Cara oranges are a type of navel orange that are low in acid, so they taste sweeter than most other varieties. Here's more info and a recipe for an orange curd made with Cara Caras.

Cara Caras have the same round shape and bright orange rind as traditional navels. What really sets these oranges apart is what's on the inside! Cara Cara oranges have distinct pinkish-red and orange flesh. It's not just their beautiful color that makes them stand out — they have a remarkable taste that goes right along with it. Compared to traditional navels, Cara Caras are sweeter, slightly tangy, and less acidic, with a hint of red fruit, like cranberry or blackberry. And if that's not enough, they're seedless, too.

From the major growing regions, Cara Caras are ready for market starting in late fall and Venezuelan fruits arrive in October and Californian fruits make their seasonal debut in late November and are available through April.

Orange Peel Extracts and Reduction of Styrofoam Pollution

Individual;s and companies continue to work with oranges and orange by products to find eco-friendly uses that are Natural and environmentally useful.

The purpose of this experiment was to find an eco-friendly solution to the Styrofoam pollution problem. This was done by applying citrus extracts from oranges, lemons, and grapefruits onto several six-inch Styrofoam plates to see if the Styrofoam would disintegrate.

The results showed the hand squeezed orange, lemon and grapefruit oil peels all worked to deteriorate the Styrofoam plate. The homemade solution and juices did not deteriorate the Styrofoam. The Styrofoam, with the orange oil peel extract, deteriorated the most. It had a 1-cm hole by day four. The lemon oil peel extract was the second best. On day four, the largest hole was 0.01 cm. The grapefruit oil peel extracts was the least effective. The largest hole measured 0.0001 cm by day four.

The conclusion is that hand squeezed orange peel oil disintegrate the Styrofoam plate the best. The hypothesis that hand squeezed lemon peel oil would work the best has to be rejected. It was not as strong as the orange peel oil. All the citrus fruit oil peels when tested were able to disintegrate Styrofoam. Only the oil from the peels, not the juice from the inside of the fruit or homemade solution was able to dissolve the Styrofoam. Next experiment, plan to test different variety of citrus fruits to see if they are able to help Styrofoam deteriorate.

The purpose of this experiment was to find an eco-friendly solution to the Styrofoam pollution problem.

Citrus Salad with Oranges, Pistachios, and Pomegranate Seeds

Oranges are one of the most healthful fruits around -- and one of the most versatile.

On the health side of things, oranges are just chock full of vitamins. Known best for their extremely high vitamin C content, oranges also contain vitamin A, which is an important antioxidant, and B6, which helps with healthy skin and fighting fatigue. Oranges contain potassium and calcium, are a great source of fiber, and may even help lower cholesterol. They also help prevent kidney stones and boost respiratory health, among other benefits. No wonder oranges are listed as a superfood.

Orange-flower water can give even a simple fruit salad a faraway lilt, but adding too much of it leaves a dish tasting like old-fashioned soap. Use this ingredient with serious discretion—start with 1/8 tsp.

Ingredients

4 Servings

    2 navel oranges
    1 blood orange
    2 tangerines
    2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds
    1/8 teaspoon orange-flower water (optional)
    1 tablespoon chopped roasted pistachios
    Flaky sea salt (for serving)

Directions

Ingredient Info: Orange-flower water, a flavoring extract, is available at liquor stores, Middle Eastern markets, and in the cocktail-mixers or baking sections of some supermarkets.

Using a sharp knife, remove peel and pith from navel oranges, blood orange, and tangerines. Working over a bowl, cut between membranes to release segments into bowl; reserve juice.

Mix citrus segments and juice with pomegranate seeds and orange-flower water, if using. Top with pistachios and salt.

January Is Fiber Focus Month

January is Fiber Focus Month and there is almost  no better source of fiber than a fresh Navel orange.

An average orange has 2.3 grams of healthy soluble fiber. The average orange is approximately 13% fiber by weight.

Consuming fiber not only keeps your digestive system working properly, but it can also lessen your risk of disease. Most U.S. adults, however, consume only about half as much fiber per day as they should. If you wish to increase your fiber intake, adding fresh fruits such as oranges to your diet can play a helpful role.

Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Oranges are generally available from winter through summer with seasonal variations depending on the variety.

Oranges are round citrus fruits with finely-textured skins that are, of course, orange in color just like their pulpy flesh; the skin can vary in thickness from very thin to very thick. Oranges usually range from approximately two to three inches in diameter.

Oranges are a Very Good Source of Fiber

Oranges are in the top ten foods highest in Fiber!

Oranges' health benefits continue with their fiber, which has been shown to reduce high cholesterol levels thus helping to prevent atherosclerosis. Fiber can also help out by keeping blood sugar levels under control, which may help explain why oranges can be a very healthy snack for people with diabetes. In addition, the natural fruit sugar in oranges, fructose, can help to keep blood sugar levels from rising too high after eating. The fiber in oranges can grab cancer-causing chemicals and keep them away from cells of the colon, providing yet another line of protection from colon cancer. And the fiber in oranges may be helpful for reducing the uncomfortable constipation or diarrhea in those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome.

In addition to oranges' phytonutrients, vitamin C, and fiber, they are a good source of folate, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), vitamin B1, potassium, copper, pantothenic acid, and calcium.

Navel Oranges Now

If you are new to healthy eating and you have pledged to eating more fruits you can’t do any better than eating navel oranges.

I don’t know about you but Navel Oranges are my favorite among oranges. The great news is that Navel Orange harvesting is happening now.

There are numerous health benefits to navel oranges, and these go beyond just the obvious. The obvious and most well-know benefit of navel oranges is of course Vitamin C. This is arguably the most well-known benefit because navel oranges are a citrus fruit, and every citrus fruit has some kind of Vitamin C content to it. Though the amount of C content can vary amongst all the citrus fruits, the amount in navel oranges is definitely high. But again, this is not the only benefit of navel oranges, just the most obvious.

Another great health benefit of navel oranges is beta carotene. This is an antioxidant that helps prevent and repair cell damage. This cell damage can be due to any number of things like illness or free radicals, which are everywhere and which the body also naturally produces free radicals as a byproduct of digestion. Getting rid of these using the beta carotene in navel oranges can greatly improve your health and vitality.

Most dietitians will tell you that it is better to get these vitamins and minerals out of your food rather than a pill. And since navel oranges are low in calories, fat and cholesterol free and high in fiber and other nutrients, it is a good way to get your daily dosage of these things. It is also juicy and delicious, and available all through the winter.

What is better than a sweet and delicious citrus fruit like navel oranges to get you through the chilly fall and icy winter? They will remind you of spring and summer even as the snow outside is gathering. Indeed, navel oranges can make you appreciate the sun of spring and heat of summer that much more when they return.

Calcium is another benefit of navel oranges that you may not have thought of. Often, you can find calcium enhanced juices in the dairy case, but many times if you eat a varied diet and consume navel oranges, you may not need that extra calcium. The rest is simply extra that will go unprocessed by your body.

In the store choose oranges that have smoothly textured skin and are firm and heavy for their size. These will have a higher juice content than those that are either spongy or lighter in weight. In general, oranges that are smaller will be juicier than those that are larger in size, as will those that feature thinner skins. Of course you can let Sunburst  Oranges choose the very best for you. We have Navels ready for you.
