Sunburst Oranges & Orange County Liver Life Walk 2014

Sunburst Oranges had a wonderful time sponsoring the Liver Life Walk 2014 in Irvine on Saturday, June 21st. The Liver Walk raised $33,000.

Special thanks to The American Liver Foundation, Toni Hull and Taly Fantini for all their assistance in setting us up for Sponsorship and making us feel comfortable before, during and after the event. The appreciation also felt while at the event was overwhelming.  Also we would like to thank the Marina High School Key Club for volunteering their time.  We were immediately asked if they could be of assistance upon arriving at the park on Saturday morning.  With their help, we were able to unload our vehicle and set up our booth in a much more timely manner.  These students were always willing to help with any task needed and showed outstanding citizenship.

Special thanks to Dr. Hoefs and his staff for making us feel welcomed and very appreciated and allowing us to be a part of their group photo.

Special thanks to everyone who attending the event and came by to say Hello and showed interest in Sunburst Oranges.  We received many compliments on our Citrus and appreciate the praise we have seen on social media and via email.   We met so many wonderful people and wanted to thank everyone who shared their stories with us on why they support the American Liver Foundation.

Thanks to the personnel from the businesses looking for corporate gifts which usually send chocolates or cookies and thought the healthier alternative of Sunburst Oranges gift boxes were a much better idea.

Thanks to Harvey, a textile business owner which manufactures textiles in the Los Angeles Area. Who wanted to offer his services by creating a citrus themed material which we could use as a lining in a gift basket or a draw string bag or a small swatch of cloth for the jam/jelly lids.

We would also like to thank Robert and his staff at Office Max in Porterville for their prompt response in fulfilling our last minute orders for printed materials in order to make this walk a success.

Don't forget to use the Coupon Code OCL2014 when placing your orders online at sunburstoranges.com to make your purchase and help promote Liver Heal and Disease Prevention.  With every order, Sunburst Oranges will donate a portion of proceeds to the American Liver Foundation.

Congratulations to Chris Behrens. The winner of the drawing for the Gift Package from Sunburst Oranges.  We would like to thank you for your participation and we hope enjoy this delicious sample of what we have to offer at sunburstoranges.com.

National Orange Blossom Day – June 27

National Orange Blossom Day is the national day of celebration to honor the flower that produces oranges.  Orange blossoms have been used in culinary dishes, desserts, and teas worldwide.  They add a slight citrus flavor to any dish! Because of its intoxicating fragrance, the blossom is used as an additive to honey, tea, incense and perfumes."

Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. We did however find that this holiday has been celebrated for years. There is plenty of documentation to support that this holiday does indeed exist. This is referred to as a "National" day. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. Even though, this is still a holiday to celebrate.

Some orange trivia

Navel oranges are named that because of the belly-button formation opposite the stem end. The bigger the navel in an orange, the sweeter it will be.

When is an orange green? When it’s a Valencia! Sometimes warm weather causes the skin to regreen, or reabsorb chlorophyll, giving it a greenish color. But it will still taste great.

Oranges are high in antioxidants, which neutralize the effects of free radicals, unstable oxygen molecules in your body, believed to cause aging and some diseases.

Moro oranges are also called blood oranges!  But don’t worry. That’s just because the pulp is bright red. They’re really a sweet treat.

After chocolate and vanilla, orange is the  world’s favorite flavor.

The orange blossom gives its touristic nickname to the Costa del Azahar ("Orange-blossom coast"), the Castellon seaboard.

In Spain, fallen blossoms are dried  and then used to make tea. A French electronic and world music band has taken the name Orange Blossom.

Sunburst Oranges Presents Electricity From an Orange

We all know that teachers are looking for safe experiments they can do in their classrooms and keep the students interested and engaged. Here is a fun experiment you can do using an orange and a couple of common household items.

Purpose
To demonstrate how an electrical current can be generated using citrus fruits such as lemons, limes or oranges that is strong enough to power a small LED light bulb.

Electrical current is the flow of electrons of an electrical charge and is measured using an ammeter. Solid conductive metals contain large population of free electrons, which are bound to the metal lattice and move around randomly due to thermal energy. When two terminals of a battery are connected via a wire, the free electrons of the conductor drift toward the positive terminal, making them the electrical current carrier within the conductor.

Required Materials
Citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, grapefruits, or oranges.
1 Copper nail, approximately 2 inches in length
1 Galvanized zinc nail, about 2 inches in length
A holiday LED light, with enough wire to connect to the nails.

Estimated Experiment Time
5 to 10 minutes

Step-By-Step Instructions
1. Prepare your fruit by squeezing it on all sides with your hands. Make sure not to squeeze too tightly and break the skin! This will soften the fruit enough so that the juice inside are flowing.

2. Insert your nails into the fruit, approximately 2 inches apart from one another. The ends (sharp tips) of the nails should be in the center of the fruit, but not touching one another. Be careful not to pierce the nails through the opposite end of the fruit.

3. Remove the insulation around the bulb wires (the leads) so you can expose the wire underneath. You need to remove enough insulation so you can wrap the exposed wire around the nails.

4. Take one of the exposed wires and wrap it around the galvanized (zinc) nail. If the wire keeps slipping off, use some electrical tape or gator clips to keep it attached.

5. Wrap the other end of the wire around the copper nail.

6. When the second wire is attached to the copper nail, your bulb will light up!

Sunburst Oranges Celebrates Father’s Day

Since 1966, when President Johnson signed a proclamation setting aside the third Sunday in June to honor all American dads, Father’s Day has been an uncomfortable fit for many men. There’s something a bit off about expecting 7-year-olds to be grateful.

We know the best dads aren’t looking for praise: “Just go be a kid and I’ll do the work around here,” is how the tape in their heads runs. Still, we don’t ignore presidential proclamations around here! And we think it’s good for the all children, of all ages, to recognize the special father for all he does.

To fathers, near and far, past and present, by birth or chosen, at the ball game or those deployed... Happy Father's Day - You make my life Special!

Fathers' Day is the U.S. celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days by many other countries.

Father's Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis' Mother's Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. Several local clergymen accepted the idea, and on 19 June 1910, the first Father's Day, "sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city.

Typically, families gather to celebrate the father figures in their lives. In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting greeting cards and traditionally masculine gifts such as electronics and tools. Schools and other children's programs commonly have activities to make Father's Day gifts.

Sunburst Orange Blossom Honey!

There is a magnificent by-product of having bees do our pollinating and it is the most wonderful tasting honey.

Just like eating Sunburst Oranges, eating our Sunburst Orange Blossom Honey has many beneficial properties.

The healing powers of honey have been used for centuries, but you might be surprised how many health benefits you can get from this kitchen staple. This golden liquid has been shown to help fix ailments ranging from a pesky cough to a painful wound.

However, children under the age of one should never consume honey, raw or pasteurized.

Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis.

When shopping for honey and you'll see that some are lighter, others are darker. In general, the darker the honey, the more antibacterial and antioxidant power it has.

Honey helps with coughs. In a study of 110 children, a single dose of honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough and allowing proper sleep.

Pure, California Honey created in the Orange Blossoms of the San Joaquin Valley.

Why make your own fresh squeezed orange juice?

What happens with Industrially-produced orange juice, is after the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed from them.  This allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling.  This makes the juice completely flavorless. Then the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice.

Fresh squeezed orange juice can be a good source of vitamins and other nutrients.  Squeezing your own at home would be about the only way to get the real flavor and these nutrients.

Since you looking for the perfect gift for business associates, family or friends we know we can help with healthy alternatives. A quick visit to http://sunburstoranges.com can solve all of your fresh gift giving adventures. We sell only the finest selections and the freshest citrus you can buy. What happens with Industrially-produced orange juice, is after the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed from them.  This allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling.  This also makes the juice completely flavorless. Then the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice.

Fresh squeezed orange juice can be a good source of vitamins and other nutrients.  Squeezing your own at home would be about the only way to get the real flavor and these nutrients.

An 8 ounce glass of fresh squeezed has just one-hundred-twelve calories and only 1% fat content. By nature it will have 0% Cholesterol and Sodium content. The Dietary Fiber will vary as the squeezing method will affect the amount of pulp content in the glass.

By contrast you may find that your “Orange Drink” can be as much as 448 calories in an 8 ounce glass. Not everything that is orange is good for you.

Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Oranges are generally available from winter through summer with seasonal variations depending on the variety.

Oranges are round citrus fruits with finely-textured skins that are, of course, orange in color just like their pulpy flesh; the skin can vary in thickness from very thin to very thick. Oranges usually range from approximately two to three inches in diameter.

Our California Citrus GiftPacks are chock full of nature’s bounty. Think of us as your nationwide farmers market for oranges.

Dear Sunburst Oranges… Greetings from Wyoming

Dear Sunburst Oranges

This note is more than a bit overdue.  But I did want to make sure I could express this sentiment to you directly.

I live in Wyoming and so far I have received my box of oranges, my chocolates and my orange marmalade.

Unless you have lived in a small town in Wyoming, you just don’t know what a treat it is getting your delicious, sweet oranges during the winter months.

I’m not sure which I liked more, the chocolates or the oranges. They were both heavenly.

I do have one small complaint.  At least for me, you should offer the marmalade in much bigger jars. I  might use the orange marmalade, much faster than most of your average customers.  It is good on my toast and makes a great start to the day.

I now know that I will have to get at least two jars to keep up with my appetite.

Your favorite customer in Wyoming

Mable

Thank you for the kind words.  We are glad you enjoy our products.

Pork Loin Chops with Jalapeno Apricot Glaze

Here is a delicious pork recipe using Sunburst Oranges’ Jalapeno Apricot Jam. The sweet and slight spice glaze compliments the pork to a tee.

Pork Loin Chops with Jalapeno Apricot Glaze

Ingredient
2 Large Pork Loin Sirloin or 4 Small Bone-in Pork Chops ( do not use ultra thick chops for this recipe)
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
½ Cup Chicken Stock
½  Cup Sunburst Oranges Jalapeno Apricot Jam
1 T Dijon Mustard
½ tsp Redman Trading Real Salt garlic salt

Direction
Preheat Oven to 350 degrees. Spray baking dish with a non stick spray
Season both sides of the pork with garlic salt and fresh ground pepper.

Heat olive oil in a heavy frying pan. Brown Pork Chops – 3 minutes on each side.

Put pork chops in baking dish and put in preheated oven to roast 8-10 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.

While pork chops cook, deglaze the pan with the chicken stock. Scraping off any brown bits.  Cook until stock is reduced by half. Then whisk in the Jalapeno Apricot jam. Cook 2-3 minutes. Whisk in the Dijon mustard.

Put the pork chops into the pan with the sauce, turning them several time to coat with the sauce. Cook about 2 minutes more. Place pork chops on plate, spoon sauce over the pork and serve.

Sunburst Celebrates Leave Your Office Early Day

Did you know that June 2nd is Leave the Office Early Day?  This particular holiday was started by Laura Stack, a specialist in (amongst other things) employee productivity.

We all know the saying. “Time is money”, and the quicker things get done, at optimal levels, the more productive (and profitable) a business will be. So getting all of your work done early is a good thing, Right?

The nature of work is that, for the most part, employees would rather be somewhere else, doing something else, and this can lead to distraction which results in lower productivity.

The interminable working day can prove disheartening, acting as a demotivational factor, causing employees to work at a sluggish pace to match the snail’s pace of the clock.

Inflexible working hours set in stone can turn any hare into a tortoise, and although the latter won the proverbial race, the former would have achieved the same in less time had it only applied itself to the task.

Leave the Office Early Day is an incentive for employees to complete tasks before schedule, increasing efficiency and productivity with an incentive to go home sooner.

The early exit of the workplace acts as a carrot, compelling the employee to complete tasks to maximum potential in minimum time, reducing levels of idleness amongst workers.

The increase in productivity may transfer itself to other days of the week, where more can be achieved within the confines of a conventional working day.

This managerial strategy is beneficial to both employees and employers, a win win situation for both parties, and holds true to the theory that happy workers are more efficient and productive workers, responding better to positive rather than negative reinforcement.

Leave The Office Early Day can result in a sense of commonality between the stratified workforce, reminding everyone that they are in the same boat and striving towards a common goal.

Both employer and employee would be happy to see the end of the working day, after all, to leave the office environment and return to their own lives.

The effect is to create a sense of empathy between co-workers, whatever position they occupy in the workplace hierarchy, which leads to greater co-operation. Higher levels of co-operation in the workplace may lead to increased productivity.

More work done in less time is beneficial to the business seeking private gain, or to society or humanity at large, and Leave The Office Early Day is just another chapter in the quest for maximum productivity at your business.
