Orange Juice gets a bad rap for being packed with sugar, so we pitted the fruit and pulp against each other in a nutrition showdown
If you like to start your morning with a big glass of Orange Juice, you've probably heard the juice's bad rap: It's jam-packed with sugar—about 34 grams per 12 fluid ounce glass. But there's good news! Juicing does have its benefits and OJ could be more nutritious than plain ol' oranges, according to a new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Researchers in Germany and Saudi Arabia compared the carotenoid, flavonoid, and vitamin C amounts in fresh orange segments, orange puree, and orange juice, and found the bioaccessibility—or amount of food available for your intestines to absorb—was higher for all of the nutrients in the OJ compared to those in the orange segments or the puree. The bioaccessibility of carotenoids increased three to four times while the flavonoids increased four to five times. There was also about a 10 percent increase in the bioaccessibility of vitamin C in the orange juice compared with the orange segments or puree.
For juice lovers, this study is good news—but don't stock up on bottles of OJ just yet. The study wasn't done on humans, but rather using test tubes and flasks to mimic digestion, so further research is needed (especially in humans!) to strengthen the findings. Even more: Oranges and products made from oranges naturally contain low amounts of both carotenoids and flavonoids. Similarly, small differences in flavonoids available may not be significant to your health.
Ultimately, the fruit itself may be the better bet—much of the fiber in oranges is lost during juicing. (Fiber doesn't need to be boring! Whip up one of these Healthy Recipes Featuring High-Fiber Foods.) If you look at the amount of fiber in juice compared to 1 cup of orange segments, it's 0.7 grams and 4.3 grams, respectively. That's a big difference! Further, many orange juice beverages contain added sugar and not much real juice. This is why it's important to always read the labels to ensure your juice is made from, well, 100 percent juice.
Determining the sugar differences between an orange and 100 percent orange juice is a little trickier too. A portion of OJ (1/2 cup) contains 10.5 grams of sugar. It takes 1 1/2 oranges to make 1/2 cup of orange juice—so whether you eat the fruit or drink the juice, you'll get the same amount of sugar. When you start gulping downs cups of OJ, though, sugar can absolutely get out of control. It's much easier to drink 2 cups of juice than to eat the six oranges it took to get the juice!

Orange Juice Has Many Uses
In many homes, Orange Juice is used just once a day.
That is a real shame, because 100% orange juice dishes out worthwhile vitamins
and minerals (and also contains zero saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium or
added sugar).
Some nutritional highlights: Orange juice is crammed with vitamin
C, an important antioxidant that helps support a healthy immune system, along
with potassium, which plays an important role in muscle function and may help
reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. The juice also delivers
folate, essential for healthy red blood cells, and vitamin B6, which helps the
body process energy from food.
Cakes and Quick Breads:
Use orange juice in place of water and/or milk in
your favorite cake and quick bread recipes.
Citrus Glaze:
Combine confectioners’ sugar and orange juice
(instead of milk or water) and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over your favorite
quick breads, muffins, angel food cake and challah bread.
Fruit Topping:
Combine sliced strawberries and orange juice and let
sit for 30 minutes (or overnight in the fridge). Spoon berries and juice over
sliced angel food cake, frozen yogurt, pancakes and waffles.
Ice Cubes:
Make flavorful ice by filling ice cube trays with
orange juice instead of water. Add the cubes to sangria, fruit punch or hot or
cold tea. Bonus: You can use the cubes in your favorite fruit smoothies without
diluting the puree.
Ice Pops:
Make frozen treats sans added sugar and
preservatives; simply pour the juice into your favorite freezer-pop molds. For
a creamy version, combine equal parts orange juice and vanilla yogurt. (For a
very berry top, add berries to the bottom of the molds before adding juice.)
Marinades:
Instead of traditional wine- or vinegar-based
marinades, try OJ; the acid tenderizes meat, fish, poultry and pork. Mix the
juice with different seasonings, such as garlic, oregano, thyme, basil and
pepper. For an Asian-style marinade, mix the juice with soy sauce, ginger,
garlic, sesame oil and cilantro.
Orange Juice Chicken:
Instead of using a can of beer, insert a can of OJ
into the cavity of the chicken before cooking on the grill. The orange juice
flavors the entire chicken because, as the juice heats up, it creates a citrus
steam that permeates the chicken from the inside out.
Salad Dressings and Vinaigrettes:
Replace all but 1 tablespoon of oil with orange
juice in your favorite dressing and vinaigrette recipes and don’t forget to
add grated orange peel, too.
Sauces:
Use orange juice to deglaze pans that you’ve used to
pan-sear chicken, pork, seafood, shellfish and steak. The juice picks up the
browned bits from the bottom of the pan and creates a fabulous braising liquid.
Smoothies:
Create dairy-free smoothies by combining fresh fruit
(strawberries, bananas, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) with orange
juice instead of milk or yogurt.

citrus for yourself or as a gift for a business associates, your family or

Do You Know About Color Me Orange?
Color Me Orange embraces who we are: a group of people, organizations and businesses determined to inspire, educate and entertain as many as we can. We do not promote the politics of people; we promote the education of the individual to be better prepared for understanding and seeking cures; and to have a better understanding of the same plights people are facing around the world.
We are animal lovers too, and we do support the politics we have studied and deem will help the many homeless and abused dogs, cats, and our beloved pot-bellied pigs. We will not turn our backs on any animal but we will seek to stop those who would harm the helpless.
Our Group:
It started with Orange is the New Liver as a Facebook page to promote the efforts of the American Liver Foundation because of the devastating effects the viral disease of Hepatitis C had befallen on one of our own. Then we found Morgan Da Organ and learned 30 million people, 1 of every 10 in our country alone, many helpless children, are struck with a liver disease. Morgan taught how important the liver is to every part of our bodies.
Then, Morgan and our very own Plucky the Orange of Sunburst Oranges with his wide array of citrus, fruits, candies, jams, gifts and an incredible knowledge of citrus around the world. became best friends. Together, they won the first ever Liver Lover Award from the American Liver Foundation!
And along came Hedgy the Blue Hedgehog. Friend to all and a “Doer of Good Deeds”. Hedgy represents a group of people that tirelessly continue to make a difference to many orphans, as well as the handicapped, around the world, and to promote the family unit and fatherhood here at home.
Not to forget Louie the Lizard whose goal is to promote responsible animal care, heal the wounded, lead the lost home, and find a home for those on their own.

What Orange Juice Connoisseurs Need To Know
For Orange Juice Connoisseurs nothing is more appealing than a glass of freshly squeezed Orange Juice. Sadly, the true aficionado knows finding a company who still produces a genuinely ‘fresh’ orange juice has become nigh to impossible. The dairy case of any market is filled with many choices and many claims but “freshly-squeezed” is no longer as easily found..
Farmers’ Dilemma
During the first decade of the 20th century and in the early years of the California citrus industry an enigma occurred- more oranges were being grown than could be sold. In addition, no real organization of the growers and the rapidly expanding citrus groves had yet been put into place. Consequently, in a land where orange was the ‘new gold’, citrus farmers were losing money and pulling out trees.
Advertising to the Rescue
In 1908, the recently re-named citrus growers’ co-op, Sunkist Growers, retained the services of the Chicago based and well-renowned adverting agency of Lord & Thomas. Albert Lasker, 28 years old at this time and now credited as a founder of the modern-day ad industry, created campaigns for oranges that encouraged consumers to both eat oranges, and also to drink orange juice. His campaign efforts were enough to lift the citrus industry from its slump and help create our taste-bud’s desire for that fresh-squeezed taste.
New Discoveries & New Trends
Orange juice was quick to become its own industry in both California and Florida. But to preserve the juice to store and ship was the question of the technology of the day. Professor Thomas B. Mack of the University of Florida an avid collector of citrus information noted in his work
Citrus Facts II
A little known story is told that states that the first citrus concentrate was made in an ice cream freezer early in 1920 by Dr. J. E. Crump. Dr. Crump was a practicing veterinarian and citrus grower living in Winter Haven [Florida] at the time. Many other early attempts to produce citrus concentrate were made, but none proved successful until 1947 when Dr. L. W. McDowell and his staff, working for the Florida Citrus Commission, developed the product as we know it today.
Concentrates and NFC takes cares of the masses, but what about the true freshly-squeezed devotee?
The 1980’s & 90’s
The fresh squeezed orange juice business saw it’s heyday during this period. To keep freshly-squeezed juice viable for commercial sales processors implemented specialized handling and cleaning of the fruit, strict and regimented sanitation procedures, packaging innovation and proprietary inventory management programs. Companies, such as Odwalla and Naked Juice, could process fresh orange juice and became quite successful not only with the fresh juice but with the introduction of the ‘smoothie’, a drink with a mostly OJ base.
Fresh Orange Juice Today
The fresh squeezed industry has changed with changing consumer requirements for guaranteed protection from food and beverage manufactures. In other words, the risks and worries to service the OJC’s of our time is not worth the potential loss or losses. OJC’s you are on your own! But SUNBURST ORANGES is here to give all the support and the all the oranges you need to satisfy the desire for the true freshly-squeezed taste of orange juice.
For over 30 years we have been a part of the fresh-squeezed orange juice industry. Sunburst Oranges offers its services and knowledge to provide the OJC (Orange Juice Connoisseur) the best orange available, at any given time of the year, to make the finest, premium, freshly-squeezed juice possible.

Mandarin Oranges Significantly Prevent Liver Cancer
Two studies in Japan have found that eating mandarin oranges significantly reduces the risk of liver cancer. The protective effect may be due in part to vitamin A compounds known as carotenoids, which give mandarin oranges their color.
Researchers at the National Institute of Fruit Tree Science surveyed 1,073 people in the Japanese town of Mikkabi, in Shizuoka, where mandarin orange consumption is high. Chemical markers found in the blood of the Mikkabi residents were linked to a lower risk of liver disease, hardened arteries and insulin resistance.
A separate study conducted by scientists at Kyoto Prefuctural University of Medicine studied 75 patients with viral hepatitis and found that the group of 30 that drank mandarin orange juice for a year had no liver cancer. The disease was found in 8.9 percent of the 45 not drinking the juice.
"Mandarin oranges contain potent medicine," said Mike Adams, a holistic nutritionist and author of The Seven Laws of Nutrition. "Liver cancer is only one of many diseases that mandarin oranges help prevent and even reverse," he said. "Nature has provided us with the best medicines in the world, but as consumers, we have to be wise enough to recognize these gifts and take action to benefit from them. That means eating and drinking multiple servings of fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds on a daily basis."
The Kyoto researchers admitted more work was needed and announced their plan to continue the study for five years.
Cathy Ross, a cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, felt the studies underlined the influence on fruits and vegetables on health.
"This research appears to support the BHF recommendation of eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease," she said. "Different colored fruit and vegetables contain different vitamins and minerals, so the more types of fruit and vegetables you can include in your diet the better."
People who eat healthy foods tend to have healthy skin, happier outlooks, better energy, better sex lives, healthy sleep, healthy hearts, healthy liver function and greatly improved brain function. They are more creative, adaptable and optimistic, and they tend to enjoy their lives. They spend relatively little on health care expenses while investing their money in organic foods, green products, medicinal herbs and nutritional supplements.

The Three Oranges; A French Story
by Cleo Jay; Adapted from Les Trois Oranges d’Amour by Alfred de Musset
Once upon a time, there was a Prince who never laughed nor smiled. Amongst his people he had the reputation of being a somber young man who always seemed very alone.
One day, a mysterious woman declared, ‘I will make the Prince laugh. I will make him laugh and cry, just you see.’ She dressed herself up in rags sewn together with pieces of string and let her hair fall loose down to her shoulders. Then she took a small drum and went to dance in front of the Royal Palace. Upon hearing the music the Prince appeared on his balcony.
The woman danced and danced with such a singular passion that she did not notice the lose string hanging from her garment. She tripped on the string and fell to the floor in a heap. When he saw the woman fall the Prince burst into fits of uncontrollable laughter. When she noticed the Prince laughing the woman grew angry and cursed him by saying, ‘May you never laugh again until you find the three oranges!’
The Prince suddenly became very silent and felt a deep sadness growing inside of his chest. This sadness continued for many days until he thought to himself, ‘I want to have fun and to laugh once more so I will look for the three oranges wherever they might be.’
And off he went in search of the three oranges. First he searched all of the neighboring villages, then he searched further and further afield until he reached the edge of his father’s Kingdom.
Early one morning, several weeks into his quest, the Prince came across the evil woman who had cursed him. But this time the woman was wearing beautiful clothes instead of rags and so the Prince did not recognize her.
‘Where are you going, young man?’ asked the woman. ‘I am looking for the three oranges,’ he answered. ‘Oh but they are very far from here,’ said the woman. ‘They are deep inside of a cave on the seashore and they are protected by three fierce dogs. You must travel north until you reach the sea and there you will find the entrance to the cave hidden behind some large rocks.’
The Prince thanked the woman and then bought three loaves of bread for his journey.
After many days of travel he finally reached the rocks and then discovered the cave hidden nearby. Just as the Prince was about to enter the cave a growling dog came charging towards him out of the darkness. Without thinking he threw the dog his first loaf of bread and kept on walking into the cave.
A second dog was standing close by, its eyes glaring at him from out of the darkness. The Prince gave this dog his second loaf of bread and continued walking further and further into the dark cave.
A little further still, the Prince came upon a third dog which was growling and slobbering and looked set to attack. Just as before the Prince offered the animal his last loaf of bread and continued to explore the cave while all three beasts were occupied with their meals.
Finally the Prince walked out of the darkness into a large room. In the middle of the room there was a long table and on the table there were three golden boxes.
Without wasting any time the Prince snatched the three boxes from the table and ran out of the cave as fast as his feet would carry him.
The Three Oranges
After running for many hours he came to rest in the shade of a tall tree and decided to open the first box. Inside he found an orange and to his surprise it started speaking:
‘Water! Water!’ implored the orange. ‘I need water otherwise I will die!’
The Prince wanted to help but unfortunately he had no water and so the orange soon died.
The Prince did not want to make a similar mistake with the second orange and so he decided to continue on his journey. Just as night was falling he arrived at an inn by the side of the road. He sat down and ordered food, a bottle of wine, and a jug of cool water. Only when he was sure that he was prepared did he decide to open the second golden box.
When he opened the box he found a second orange, and just as before this orange spoke to him in a voice full of desperation:
‘Water! Water!’ implored the orange. ‘I need water otherwise I will die!’
But in his haste the Prince poured wine over the orange instead of water and at once the orange fell silent and died.
The next day, the Prince left the inn and continued on his homeward journey. He travelled for many miles until he reached a river at the foot of a tall mountain. It was there that he decided to stop and open the third and final golden box.
Just as before he found an orange inside, and just as before the orange spoke in a voice full of desperation:
‘Water! Water!’ implored the orange. ‘I need water otherwise I will die!’
‘This time,’ said the Prince, ‘you will not die from lack of water.’
Then he threw the golden box into the river so that the orange might drink all the water it needed.
As soon as the box landed in the river, a huge cloud of white smoke appeared in the air all around. As soon as the smoke cleared there appeared a young Princess more beautiful than the sun!
The couple embraced one another and instantly fell in love. Then, without hesitation, they made their way to the nearest village where they were married the very next day.
The Prince and Princess were very happy and soon a son was born to complete their little family. The Prince said, ‘We must visit the Royal Palace as I have not sent news to my father the King and it has been almost a year since I set out on my quest.’
Thus the young couple set out on the long journey back to the Palace. When they were close the Prince asked his wife to rest by a water fountain while he announced their arrival to the King.
As soon as the Prince was gone the evil woman appeared before the innocent wife and child.
‘You have a very beautiful son, Princess,’ said the woman. ‘Let me hold him so that you might better rest.’
The Princess agreed and the woman took the baby in her arms. Then she said, ‘You have very beautiful hair, Princess. Let me comb it for you so that you might look your best when you meet the King.’
Once again the grateful Princess agreed. But as the woman was combing the Princess’ hair she stuck a silver pin into the back of her neck and the poor Princess was instantly transformed into a white dove.
The evil woman, who was in fact a witch, then assumed the appearance of the beautiful Princess and waited for the Prince to return.
‘It seems as if your face has changed, my dear,’ said the Prince when he finally returned. ‘Is there not also something about your person that is different?’
‘It is only the sun that has tanned my skin during our long journey,’ replied the witch. ‘I am sure it will fade in time. And if I seem different it is only because I am tired.’
The Prince was fooled by the evil witch and so took her and his son to the Royal Palace, unawares that his precious wife had been turned into a dove.
Life in the Royal Palace went on for some time and the witch continued to fool the Prince into thinking that she was his beautiful wife. But she had not fooled him completely for the Prince did not feel quite as he had done about his wife and was convinced in the back of his mind that something was not right.
One day, the old King passed away and it was the turn of the Prince to become King and rule the lands.
In the palace gardens a dove began to appear, and after many months this dove began to speak to the gardener. Each day the dove would enquire about the King and his young son. The gardener would tell the dove all that he knew and confessed that the little Prince was not a happy child and the King not a happy man.
‘The poor young Prince,’ said the dove, ‘darling of his cursed mother who is forced to live alone in the mountains as this bird you see before you.’
The gardener was most taken by the dove and one day reported its presence to the King. When he heard about the bird the King commanded the gardener to catch the unusual creature and give it to the young Prince as a companion.
The gardener did as he was instructed and the Prince received the dove and played with the magical creature for many happy days. It seemed to all in the Palace that the young Prince was finally growing into a happy child and it was agreed that this change of mood was due entirely to the little dove.
The Three Oranges One day, the little Prince noticed that the dove had a silver pin stuck in the back of its neck. He reached out and pulled the pin and instantly the dove was transformed back into the beautiful Princess. The young Prince was scared and cried out in fear, but the Princess, freed at last from the curse of the evil witch, spoke softly to the child. ‘Do not cry, my son,’ said the beautiful Princess, ‘for I am your mother and you have released me from my curse.’
Upon hearing his son cry out in fear the King entered the room and instantly recognized his one true love. ‘You have returned to me, my love,’ said the King as he embraced the beautiful Princess.
The Princess explained how it was that the evil witch had tricked her and turned her into a dove. The King grew angry and ordered the imposter Queen to be imprisoned in the dungeons forever so that she might never again do any harm.
United once more the King and his true Queen lived happily ever after for many, many years. The Kingdom flourished and the Royal Palace was forever full of love and laughter.

Orange Juice Recipe How To Make The Best Orange Juice
Nothing compares to the flavor of fresh-squeezed orange juice from fruit in its prime for a very good reason: A fair amount of processing goes into not-from-concentrate OJ. Most cartons contain the pooled juices from oranges harvested anywhere from Florida to Brazil, squeezed, pasteurized, and stored for up to a year. That's why, a glass of the fresh stuff, it was unanimously picked as the favorite.
Fresh orange juice is healthy, provides a variety of vitamins and minerals. I love to have some fruits or fruit juice in between my lunch and dinner, because it helps fill the stomach and satiate the slight hunger in between meals and prevents me from reaching other high calorie food. Personally I do not prefer to buy commercial juices which is mostly loaded with preservatives, artificial sweeteners, coloring and what not. Most juice available commercially is heavily processed. I love to make juice from fresh fruits. Nothing tastes better than freshly squeezed juice and we can be sure there are no added preservatives or sweeteners. Oranges are great for the skin as it is packed with antioxidants and Vitamin C. Eating oranges or drinking a glass of orange juice everyday gives a clear and glowing complexion. It also helps improve your immunity. The health benefits of oranges are many and I do not want to bore you with all that. Today we see how to make orange juice.

Sunburst Oranges Health Benefits
Oranges' Healing Phytonutrients In recent research studies, the healing properties of oranges have been associated with a wide variety of phytonutrient compounds. These phytonutrients include citrus flavanones (types of flavonoids that include the molecules hesperetin and naringenin), anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, and a variety of polyphenols. When these phytonutrients are studied in combination with oranges—vitamin C, the significant antioxidant properties of this fruit are understandable.
But it is yet another flavanone in oranges, the herperidin molecule, which has been singled out in phytonutrient research on oranges. Arguably, the most important flavanone in oranges, herperidin has been shown to lower high blood pressure as well as cholesterol in animal studies, and to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Importantly, most of this phytonutrient is found in the peel and inner white pulp of the orange, rather than in its liquid orange center, so this beneficial compound is too often removed by the processing of oranges into juice.
A Healthy Dose of Vitamin C for Antioxidant Protection and Immune Support
You may already know that oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C but do you know just how important vitamin C and oranges are for good health? Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body, disarming free radicals and preventing damage in the aqueous environment both inside and outside cells. Inside cells, a potential result of free radical damage to DNA is cancer. Especially in areas of the body where cellular turnover is especially rapid, such as the digestive system, preventing DNA mutations translates into preventing cancer. This is why a good intake of vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer.
Free radical damage to other cellular structures and other molecules can result in painful inflammation, as the body tries to clear out the damaged parts. Vitamin C, which prevents the free radical damage that triggers the inflammatory cascade, is thus also associated with reduced severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Free radicals also oxidize cholesterol. Only after being oxidized does cholesterol stick to the artery walls, building up in plaques that may eventually grow large enough to impede or fully block blood flow, or rupture to cause a heart attack or stroke. Since vitamin C can neutralize free radicals, it can help prevent the oxidation of cholesterol.
Vitamin C, which is also vital for the proper function of a healthy immune system, is good for preventing colds and may be helpful in preventing recurrent ear infections.
A Glass of Orange Juice More Protective than Vitamin C Alone
Phytonutrients, specifically, the class of polyphenols, are high in citrus with oranges containing 84mg Gallic Acid equivalents/100mg. The polyphenols so abundant in oranges have been shown to have a wide range of antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and anti-carcinogenic effects. Although most of the research has centered on citrus polyphenols—possible role in cancer and heart disease, more recently, scientists have begun to look at their role in brain functions such as learning and memory.
An increasing number of studies have also shown a greater absorption of the nutrients in citrus when taken not as singly as supplements, but when consumed within the fruit in which they naturally appear along with all the other biologically active phytonutrients that citrus fruits contain.
Long-Acting Liminoids in Citrus Add to Their Ability to Promote Optimal Health
In animal studies and laboratory tests with human cells, compounds in citrus fruits, including oranges, called limonoids have been shown to help fight cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon. Now, scientists from the US Agricultural Research Service have shown that our bodies can readily absorb and utilize a very long-acting limonoid called limonin that is present is citrus fruits in about the same amount as vitamin C.
In citrus fruits, limonin is present in the form of limonin glucoside, in which limonin is attached to a sugar (glucose) molecule. Our bodies easily digest this compound, cleaving off the sugar and releasing limonin.

Orange Juice Antioxidant Power Jumps 10 X
The antioxidant activity of citrus juices is 10 times higher than previously thought, according to a new analysis conducted by researchers from the University of Granada and published in the journal Food Chemistry.
Many of the chemicals that naturally occur in plant foods function as antioxidants, removing the free radical chemicals that cause cellular and DNA damage in the body and have been linked to various chronic diseases and many of the symptoms of aging. Citrus fruits are particularly high in antioxidants, and many researchers have suggested this as a potential cause for their many health benefits.
70% of antioxidants were going uncounted To date, researchers have estimated the antioxidant potential of foods by simulating the digestion of food in the small intestine, in order to only measure antioxidants that can actually be used by the body. This method only allows the measurement of antioxidants in liquid form, however.
"The problem is that the antioxidant activity of the solid fraction (the fibre) isn't measured, as it's assumed that it isn't beneficial," researcher Jose Angel Rufian Henares said. "However, this insoluble fraction arrives at the large intestine and the intestinal microbiota can also ferment it and extract even more antioxidant substances, which we can assess with our new methodology."
In order to correct his limitation, the researchers developed a new laboratory method, called "global antioxidant response" (GAR), to simulate the digestion of food not just in the small intestine but the entire gut. This allows an estimate of the antioxidant activity of solid foods.
According to the GAR method of analysis, the antioxidant contents of many foods have been drastically underestimated and will need to be revised. For example, traditional antioxidant activity tests deliver a value of approximately 2.3 mmol Trolox/L for orange juice. The GAR method, in contrast, delivers a value of 23 mmol Trolox/L.
"The antioxidant activity is, on average, ten times higher than that which everyone thought up until now, and not just in juices, but also in any other kind of food analysed with this methodology," researcher Rufian Henares said.
The researchers found that 70 percent of the antioxidant capability of orange juice came from soluble fiber, rather than liquids. Based on the new values, they estimated that as much as 12 percent of the antioxidant content of the Spanish diet comes from citrus juices.
The new method also allowed the researchers to create a mathematical model to help determine which storage or processing methods could maintain the highest antioxidant content in various juices.

Navel Oranges With Cod Recipe
When
the balance of ingredients is just right, it doesn't take much to create a
winning dish. Here, sweet and acidic navel oranges contrast the sharpness of
red onion, bringing lots of flavor to light, flaky cod.
Ingredients
3 large navel oranges
1
tbsp. olive oil
1 medium red onion
4 cod fillets
Kosher salt and pepper
Directions
Cut
away the peel and white pith of 2 oranges and cut into segments. Squeeze the
juice from the membranes into a measuring up. Squeeze the juice of the
remaining orange into the measuring cup (you should have about ¾ cup of juice
total).
Heat
the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring
occasionally until just tender, 5 to 6 minutes; transfer to a plate.
Increase
the heat to medium-high. Season the fish with ¼ tsp each salt and pepper and
cook until golden brown and opaque throughout, 3 to 4 minutes per side;
transfer to a plate.
Return
the onions to the skillet along with the orange juice and bring to a boil.
Simmer until reduced by half. Add the oranges and cook until heated through.
Serve over the salmon.
Serves
four

Orange The Color Or The Fruit
Relatively few languages have a basic term for the mixture of red and yellow. The color orange is synonymous with the citrus fruit which shares its name and hue. But do you know if the name for the fruit or the name for the color came first?
Given the exoticism of the orange fruit, you could be forgiven that the color came first as it naturally occurs independent of the fruit such as in sunsets or leaves in autumn. Orange actually comes from the Old French word for the citrus fruit - 'pomme d'orenge' - according to the Collins dictionary.
This in turn is thought have come from the Sanskrit word "nāranga" via Persian and Arabic. The use of orange as the specific description for a color is thought to have begun in the 1500s when the fruit began to regularly appear on English market stalls.
To add complication to our understanding of color, not all world languages have as many basic color terms as English. The association is actually not that strong. In Vietnam, the same word (cam) is used for both the color and the fruit, even though our oranges are, without a doubt, green from the outside.
It's interesting that oranges, not other fruits (say bananas), enjoy the privilege of having a color named after them (Tamara Troup's answer to If oranges are called oranges, why aren't bananas called yellows?). It's remarkable that this is observed in so many languages.
Orange the fruit came first. The word came into English either from Old French 'pomme d'orenge', or from the Spanish 'naranja' (with the subsequent transfer of the 'n' over to the indefinite article, as per 'apron' and 'adder', originally 'napron' and 'nadder'). The Spanish word is itself a modification of the Arabic 'naaranj' (cf. also Persian 'naarang'). Our color term thus derives from the name of the fruit, not the other way round; we also have apricot, peach, violet, lilac, maroon, indigo, burgundy, and so on, which show how productive this process of color naming is. The second part of the question assumes that all languages have a name for the color, which does not seem to be the case. According to work carried out by Berlin and Kay in the 1960s, most of the world's languages have far fewer basic color terms than English and other European languages do. Some make do with only two color names - equivalent perhaps to 'dark', and 'light' - but three- and five-color systems seem to be among the most common. A name for a mixture of red and yellow is actually pretty rare cross-linguistically. Presumably English didn't have a basic term for the hue before oranges started to hit the market stalls, though of course that doesn't mean that people couldn't distinguish orange from red, yellow, or any other color, and they could certainly have described orange using other basic color terms, just as speakers of languages which do not feature a basic term for orange can.

The History of Orange Juice at Disneyland
What does Orange County and Disneyland have to do with the history of oranges grown in California? The search by Stanford Research Institute for the best spot for the new Disney Park finally ended in the rural Anaheim, California with a purchase of a 160-acre orange grove near the junction of the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) and Harbor Boulevard. Some 160-acres of citrus trees had been cleared and 15 houses moved to make room for the park. The area was in semi-rural Orange County, near a freeway that would eventually stretch from San Diego to Vancouver.
You may wonder what they did with the oranges when Disneyland had orange groves, what did they do with the oranges?
The oranges were sold to Sunkist by the grower -- not by Disney. I imagine that after Disney bought the land, the grower paid a lease to Disney in the intervening period between the purchase of the land and construction of the park to allow them to continue distributing their produce. But Disney never directly owned the oranges (or few walnut trees) that was on the property.
And the orange juice in the park was supplied by Sunkist, fresh squeezed at Disneyland. Not only was this served at the Citrus House, and at Sunkist House, but it was fresh squeezed every morning and distributed to all of the restaurants in the park.
After Disney and Sunkist broke ties in the late 80s to early 90s, they used Minute Maid, which is a Coca-Cola product. It is vastly inferior in that it is orange juice from concentrate. I also notice that they are selling Simply Orange, and while it is not from concentrate, the grade of oranges used in the juice is not as high as the grade used by Sunkist back when it was around.
They do have some orange trees in Disneyland, but they should definitely have more orange trees in California Adventure. Imagine how famous the new park addition could be if they made fresh orange juice from their trees each day. Well at least famous for fresh food. That could add a really great feel to California Adventure.

Runners and Oranges Go Together
Did you know there are foods that runners need every week that support good health and their top performance?
Most supermarkets stock more than 30,000 items, yet every time we race up and down the aisles of the grocery store, we toss into our carts the same 10 to 15 foods. Which isn't such a bad thing, as long as you're taking home the right foods, ones that will keep you healthy, fuel peak performance, and easily cook up into lots of delicious meals.
We all know that fresher foods give us more nutrition than foods that have set around on the grocery store shelf or in a warehouse.
At Sunburst Oranges that is never the case. We offer fresh hand-picked goodness right from our local area. Our citrus is grown in the richest soils of California in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley.
If runners eat enough oranges they may experience less muscle soreness after hard workouts such as downhill running. Why? Oranges supply over 100 percent of the DV for the antioxidant vitamin C, and a recent study from the University of North Carolina Greensboro showed that taking vitamin C supplements for two weeks prior to challenging arm exercises helped alleviate muscle soreness. This fruit's antioxidant powers also come from the compound herperidin found in the thin orange-colored layer of the fruit's skin (the zest). Herperidin has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels and high blood pressure as well.
Add orange sections to fruit and green salads, or use the orange juice and pulp for sauces to top chicken, pork, or fish. And to benefit from the antioxidant herperidin, use the orange zest in baking and cooking, as with Grilled Salmon. Select firm, heavy oranges, and store them in the fridge for up to three weeks. Orange zest can be stored dried in a glass jar for about a week if kept refrigerated.
Runner also deserve at least one indulgence, especially one you can feel so good about. Chocolate contains potent antioxidants called flavonols that can boost heart health. In one study, a group of soccer players had lower blood pressure and total cholesterol levels, and less artery-clogging LDL cholesterol after just two weeks of eating chocolate daily. Other research suggests that the chocolate flavonols ease inflammation and help prevent blood substances from becoming sticky, which lowers the risk of potential blood clots.
At Sunburst Oranges we have the finest Oranges. They were hand-picked from trees in our orchard or just down the road.
