As we get ready to celebrate our nation’s birthday our thoughts may be turning to what we are eating this weekend. If you are like most of us we planning a barbeque and that just may include ribs. We think that nothing is better than an orange infused recipe for this barbeque chicken classic. Sweet and tangy is the way to go.
Ingredients
1/2 cup freshly squeezed Sunburst Orange juice
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup hot sauce
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1 (4 pound chicken) cut into 10 pieces
Glaze:
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1/4 cup Sunburst Oranges honey
1/4 cup freshly squeezed Sunburst Orange Juice
1/4 cup BBQ sauce
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon allspice
Directions
Mix the orange juice, olive oil, hot sauce, mustard, and orange zest together in a large bowl. Add the chicken (pat dry with paper towel) and toss to combine. Cover with plastic wrap and let marinate for at least 1 hour and up to overnight in the refrigerator.
Prepare the grill to medium direct heat. Let chicken come to room temperature before grilling.
Drain the chicken from the marinade and pat dry. Grill on each side for 5 minutes, then turn the heat to medium-low and cover the lid of the grill. Continue cooking the chicken until it's cooked through, about 25 minutes more.
While the chicken is grilling, melt the butter in a small saucepan on the grill. Whisk in the honey, orange juice, BBQ sauce, zest, mustard and allspice. Reserve some of the glaze in a small ramekin for serving.
Brush the chicken pieces with glaze, then flip the chicken, glaze side down, and cook for 2 minutes. Brush second side of the chicken with glaze and flip again. Continue cooking for 3 more minutes. Remove the chicken from grill to a platter and serve with reserved glaze.
Total Time: 1 hour 55 minutes
Preparation: 20 minutes
Inactive: 1 hour
Cooking: 35 minutes
Makes 4 servings - Skill Level: Easy

Sunburst Oranges Says: Turn Waste Into Donations
I read the other day that 40% percent of the food in the Unites States goes to waste. Many of us who grow fruits and vegetables on our property are faced with the dilemma once a year of way too much bounty. We have too many ripe oranges, lemons, tomatoes, carrots or whatever. We eat them, we can them, we give them to friends, family and coworkers and still we have too many.
What can we do? Well we can donate our surplus to a local food bank.
Did you know that your excess produce from your garden can be donated to a local food pantry. More than 40 million gardeners across America grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and nuts in backyard, terrace, kitchen and community gardens. Some even have orchards or small farms. Many end up growing more than they can use, preserve or give to friends.
At the same time, tens of millions of Americans struggling to feed their families can't get fresh produce from the local food pantry.
It doesn't have to be this way.
If you are growing more food than you can use, AmpleHarvest.org can help you find a local food pantry eager to accept it.
Sunburst Oranges says please join the millions of gardeners across the country using AmpleHarvest.org to share their bounty with their neighbors in need.
An estimated 100 billion pounds of food (including oranges), enough to totally eliminate hunger, is thrown away annually in the United States.
AmpleHarvest.org envisions an America where millions of gardeners eliminate malnutrition and hunger in their own community using only their backyard gardens.
AmpleHarvest.org, the national campaign to educate, encourage and enable home and community gardeners to donate their excess garden produce to a nearby food pantry, announces that it is now being included in the US Government employee’s nationwide food drive called “Feds Feed Families”.
Created in 2009 and managed by the USDA, Feds Feed Families is an annual campaign collecting store bought food from federal employees to benefit food banks across the country along food gleaned from local farms. Like nearly every other food drive, it has largely received processed food in jars, cans and boxes, along with some produce from a few larger growers.
Thanks to this new partnership, government employees, regardless of the size of their garden, will now also be able to donate fresh food to a local food pantry going forward.

Lemons Make Black Tea Even Better
Adding Lemon juice can make tea healthier and tastier to drink. Black tea is a calorie-free beverage that contains caffeine and can help lower the risk of stroke and heart disease. These benefits may come from tea's theaflavin antioxidants, which can also help reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer.
Lemons are a rich source of vitamin C -- 1 cup of lemon juice provides more than the daily recommended dose. The ascorbic acid in vitamin C acts as an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, which can cause heart disease and diabetes. Lemons are also a good source of minerals and vitamins, including folate, potassium, magnesium and thiamine. Adding it to black tea doesn’t inhibit its nutritional effects, which makes the combination ideal for consumption.
Of course we don’t expect you to add a cup of lemon juice to your cup of tea. But, adding enough lemon juice to suit your taste is a good idea.
Add Lemon, Not Milk
Common additions to tea such as milk can block the potential health benefits of its antioxidants. A recent German study, published in a 2007 issue of the "European Heart Journal," determined that the caseins found in milk reduced the effects of the antioxidants in the tea. Milk binds with the antioxidants found in black tea, which prevents them from being absorbed, explains MedlinePlus. However, not all studies confirm milk inhibits black tea's antioxidants, and more research will be required. Lemon makes milk curdle, which helps you avoid adding milk to your tea. Without milk, lemon seems to maximize the health benefits of drinking black tea.
Lower Calories
Adding sugar or whipped cream turns calorie-free black tea into a high-calorie beverage. Lemon's naturally occurring sugars make it a suitable replacement to artificial sweeteners without the high increase in calories. Lemon also improves the taste due to its natural sugar content and citrus flavor. Replacing sugar and other fattening foods with lemons helps you reduce your calorie intake.
Now it just so happens that you can find both fresh lemons and excellent black teas on the Sunburst Oranges website. So stop by and get some very healthy products.

Orange Waste As Raw Material For New Products
The production of orange juice on an industrial level leads to a considerable quantity of solid and liquid residue (around 8–20 million tons, globally), which is still considered as waste or used as a complement in agriculture.
In general, orange residues have no economic value, even though their composition is rich in soluble sugars, cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin and essential oils that could form the basis of several industrial processes.
In a recent study, information was collected on the technological potential of the solid and liquid residues generated in the processing of orange juice. Possible applications include human consumption, fertilizer, animal feed, charcoal, adsorption of chemical compounds, bio-oil production and extraction of essential oils and pectin.
In this preliminary study, alternatives are proposed for the minimization and recovery of solid and liquid residues generated in the production of orange juice with a view to the implantation of industrial plants which can reuse this material, in order to add value to this solid and liquid waste and provide environmental benefits. The alternatives were proposed based on information and data available in the literature and the concepts of clean technologies.
Since the early part of the twentieth century the California Fruit Growers Exchange has been working with growers to find new markets and uses for the fruit, by-products and most recently the waste products from oranges.
We have featured several advances in the use of Orange residue in the manufacture of clothing, oil from oil sands and shale and other eco friendly by-products.
After juice extraction (approximately 50 percent of the fruit weight is juice), what remains is dried and made into cattle feed, molasses and a few other products. Other products for the orange waste include alcohol, wines and preserves.
The citrus peel oil is also put to good use.
"The oil is extracted from the orange peel prior to the fruit being squeezed in order to extract the orange juice. The oil, being volatile, is captured in water and later centrifuged out and stored as peel oil, D-limonene (often used in cleaning products) and other products. Peel oil is extracted from the peels prior to juicing so that it is not lost into the air. As the juice is packaged for sale, the oil is added back into the orange juice, as it enhances the flavor.
Citrus peel oil is added to other juices, such as grape and apple, as it adds to the overall flavor.
It is also used in other products such as lipstick, hand soaps and perfumes — even those perfumes that do not smell like orange.
Of course, I must say my favorite use for oranges is as a very healthy and tasty snack.

Celebrating Father's Day
As we all know Father's Day is our celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Some countries, like the U.S. celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days by many other countries.
Father's Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting.
Grace Golden Clayton may have been inspired by Anna Jarvis' crusade to establish Mother's Day; two months prior, Jarvis had held a celebration for her dead mother in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away from Fairmont.
After the success obtained by Anna Jarvis with the promotion of Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia, the first observance of a "Father's Day" was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, on December 1907, the Monongah Mining Disaster in nearby Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving around a thousand fatherless children. Clayton suggested her pastor Robert Thomas Webb to honor all those fathers.
Clayton's event did not have repercussions outside of Fairmont for several reasons, among them: the city was overwhelmed by other events, the celebration was never promoted outside of the town itself and no proclamation was made in the City Council.
Also two events overshadowed this event: the celebration of Independence Day July 4, 1908, with 12,000 attendants and several shows including a hot air balloon event, which took over the headlines in the following days, and the death of a 16-year-old girl on July 4. The local church and Council were overwhelmed and they did not even think of promoting the event, and it was not celebrated again for many years. The original sermon was not reproduced in press and it was lost. Finally, Clayton was a quiet person, who never promoted the event or even talked to other persons about it.
No matter how it started Father's Day is well deserved. Hope yours is just what you wanted.

Apples vs Oranges
That is one of the age old questions. Which is better, Apples or Oranges? Then the
question becomes are we talking about popularity, taste or health benefits?
When it comes to taste it is a matter of
personal opinion. Both taste pretty darn good.
While I prefer the sweet orange citrus taste others may find the crispness
of the apple. Both have many varieties
that offer different variations in the tastes and texture of these wonderful
snacks.
Based purely on the number shipped yearly the
orange holds a slight edge. Also more oranges are grown worldwide than apples.
The apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple
tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family (Rosaceae). It is one of the
most widely cultivated tree fruits, and the most widely known of the many
members of genus Malus that are used by humans.
The orange (specifically, the sweet orange)
is the fruit of the citrus species Citrus × sinensis in the family Rutaceae. The
fruit of the Citrus sinensis is called sweet orange to distinguish it from that
of the Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange.
Macro Nutrients
The calories in apples and oranges comes from
carbohydrates(18g-22g), of which 50% is from sugar. The fat and protein content
is very negligible in both.
Vitamins and Minerals
Oranges are an excellent source of Vitamin C,
with nearly 140% of daily intake requirement, whereas apples contain roughly
7%. Oranges also have a greater amount of Vitamin A, 6% as compared to apples
at 2%. Potassium is higher in Oranges (300mg) as compared to apples(26mg).
Apples have a higher foliage (55mcg) as compared to oranges (23mcg).
Fiber
Both apples and oranges contain soluble and
insoluble fiber, which helps regulate the bowel movements, blood sugar levels
and lower cholesterol. Apple roughly has 5 g of fiber whereas orange has 3 g.
Health Benefits
Apples are known to have numerous health
benefits ranging from preventing Asthma, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's disease,
certain cancers, gallstones, type2 diabetes and reducing cholesterol,
hemorrhoids and help controlling your weight etc. The high soluble fiber,
vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help boost your immune system and fortify
your body.
Oranges, due to their excellent source of
vitamins, fiber and minerals, also help prevent Asthma, diabetes, Arthritis,
certain cancers, kidney stones, high blood pressure and lower cholesterol. Due
to it's high acidic content and the presence of antioxidants like
Beta-carotene, oranges can protect the skin cells from getting damaged and keep
it young and moisturized.

Essential Oils From Oranges
Essential Oils are a common topic these days. We all have heard about the everyday power of scent: how a particular perfume reminds you of your mother, or when the smell of your favorite restaurant brings you back to your first date there. But did you know that some scents can actually improve your health? Essential oils can also help you relax or sleep, or improve your skin or digestion, their benefits go well beyond a pleasant smell.
Technically, essential oils aren’t oils at all, as they lack fatty acids. Rather, they’re highly concentrated plant components. It can take a huge amount of a plant to get out even a small portion of essential oil, 4,000 pounds of roses are needed to get just one pound of oil, for example. This is why some essential oils are particularly expensive.
Orange (Citrus sinesis) essential oil includes the naturally occurring constituent limonene. Orange is also a wonderful addition to enhance the flavor of many foods and drinks.
A favorite oil used in Aromatherapy is Orange essential oil. It has a fresh, sweet, citrus smell and is a valuable treatment oil for many ailments. The oil is extracted from the fruit of the Orange plant by cold-press method and it is best to only use organic, cold-pressed oils to avoid chemical toxicity.
Sweet and Bitter Orange essential oils offer a magnitude of health benefits and therapeutic properties. Some of these include:
Anti-inflammatory
It provides relief from both internal and external inflammation caused by infections. It is helpful in treating swollen tissue by stimulating blood circulation.
Anti-septic
It inhibits microbial growth and can help ease a sore throat if used in a gargle. It also helps to heal mouth ulcers when used in a mouth wash.
Skin Treatment
Orange essential oil is shown to promote the production of collagen as well as increase the blood flow to the skin. It is helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin as well as acne-prone skin. It is excellent for rubbing on calluses on the feet.
Improves Digestion
It is known to promote digestion, ease constipation and increase the absorption of vitamin C. Use as a massage oil in the abdominal area.
Essential oils are absorbed into the body via the nose and the pores of skin and hair follicles. From there they enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. The beauty of aromatherapy is that you benefit from the inhalation and topical application of the essential oils.

Oranges and Vitamin D - The Healthy Sunshine Fruit
Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Oranges are generally available from winter through summer with seasonal variations depending on the variety.
Here is the strange outcome of our title. Oranges are not a great source of Vitamin D. And products, like Orange Juice that contain it, is because the Vitamin D was added to the drink during processing.
Here is a list of the vitamins that oranges contain naturally:
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is an important nutrient for vision, and for healthy skin. However, it can be toxic in excessive quantities — an overdose can damage the skin, make bones weak or brittle, and induce fatigue and vomiting. Consult your physician before exceeding the U.S. recommended daily allowance of vitamin A.
B Vitamins
Water-soluble B vitamins play important roles in cell metabolism. Among the B vitamins contained in oranges: vitamin B1, or thiamine, which helps the body process protein, fat, and carbohydrates; vitamin B2, or riboflavin, which converts carbohydrates into fuel and activates vitamin B6 and folic acid; vitamin B3, or niacin, processes alcohol, forms fats from carbohydrates, and regulates cholesterol; vitamin B5, or panthotenic acid, helps the body get energy from fats, synthesizes cholesterol, and helps activate adrenal glands; vitamin B9, or folate, helps the body to produce red blood cells; and vitamin B6, which regulates moods and mental processes by helping to form neurotransmitters, dopamine, hormones, melatonin, and serotonin.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble substance that acts as an antioxidant, and contributes to the general health of the body in various ways. In reducing the clumping of platelets and the stiffness of arteries, it can protect against certain types of heart disease. It also strengthens blood vessels and muscles by helping the body to produce collagen, and is a natural antihistamine. Vitamin C also contributes to healing, combats viruses, assists in liver bile formation, and detoxifies the body.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E helps the body process glucose, and its antioxidant properties may protect against some types of cancer and heart disease. Vitamin E may also protect against toxins from air pollution, premenstrual syndrome, cataracts, skin damage due to ultraviolet radiation, diabetes, and certain neurological disorders. Because it boosts the activity level of the immune system, vitamin E has limited benefits for those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.

Creatures Who Have Made Orange Famous
As our regular readers know we tend to share
the strange and unusual side of oranges, their various uses and all things
orange on Wednesday. Today we are going to show somwe images of orange color
that have become part of our everyday life.
Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkins
A carved pumpkin, or turnip, associated
chiefly with the holiday of Halloween and named after the phenomenon of strange
light flickering over peat bogs, called will-o'-the-wisp or jack-o'-lantern. In
a jack-o'-lantern, the top is cut off to form a lid and the inside flesh then
scooped out; an image, usually a monstrous or comical face, is carved out of
the pumpkin's rind to expose the hollow interior. To create the lantern effect,
a light source (such as a candle or tea light) is placed within before the lid
is closed. This is traditionally a flame or electric candle, though pumpkin
lights featuring various colors and flickering effects are also marketed
specifically for this purpose. It is common to see jack-o'-lanterns on
doorsteps and otherwise used as decorations prior to and during Halloween.
Orange Colored Safety Gear
High-visibility (HV) clothing, a type of
personal protective equipment (PPE), is any clothing worn that has highly
reflective properties or a color that is easily discernible from any
background. Yellow waistcoats worn by emergency services are a common example.
Occupational wearers of clothing with high-visibility features include railway
and highway workers, airport workers, or other places where workers are near
moving vehicles or in dark areas. Some cyclists wear high-visibility clothing
when riding amongst motor vehicles. Hunters may be required to wear designated
high-visibility clothing to prevent accidental shooting.
Garfield The Cat
Garfield is a fictional character and the
title protagonist from the comic strip Garfield created by Jim Davis. The comic
strip centers on Garfield and portrays him to be a lazy, fat and cynical orange
cat. He loves lasagna and coffee, and hates Mondays, Nermal and raisins.
Garfield relates to many because of his passion for food, his ability to just
eat a lot, and his lack of motivation to work out. Sleep is his favorite hobby
and to him, "Diet is 'die' with a 't'".
Mae West Life Jacket
A personal flotation device (abbreviated as
PFD; also referred to as a life jacket, life preserver, life belt, Mae West,
life vest, life saver, cork jacket, buoyancy aid or flotation suit) is piece of
equipment designed to assist a wearer, who may be either conscious or
unconscious, to keep afloat.
PFDs are available in different sizes to
accommodate variances in body weight. Designs differ depending on wearing
convenience and level of protection.

Orange-Roasted Seafood with White Miso Sauce Recipe
Depending upon what you are trying to effect, use flavors boldly or sometimes subtly. Here is a recipe using fresh oranges and seafood, mixed with white miso sauce and scallions, and is baked in a shell of scooped-out orange.
Ingredients
4 navel oranges
Real Salt
1 bunch scallions, roots and ends trimmed
8 oysters, freshly shucked
1 pound fresh squid, bodies only, chopped into thin strips
4 large shrimp, shelled and deveined
1 cup white miso sauce
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Cut off the top 1/3 of each orange. Use a curved grapefruit knife to scoop out the insides of the oranges. Reserve the pulp for a fruit salad or other use. Reserve the orange shell to use as a cooking vessel.
Bring a medium skillet of salted water to a simmer. Add the scallions and cook for 30 seconds. With tongs, rinse the scallions under cold running water; pat dry on paper towels.
Holding the root ends, run the back of a large knife down the length of the scallions, pressing down to squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Slice into 1-inch pieces. In the same skillet, slip the oysters, squid, and shrimp into the water and poach over low heat until the edges of the oysters curl, 10 to 15 seconds. Immediately transfer to a bowl; do not overcook.
Pour 2 tablespoons of the white miso sauce into each orange shell. Spoon the seafood mixture in next, mounding as needed. Finally, top with another 2 tablespoons of the white miso sauce.
Bake the seafood-stuffed oranges for 10 minutes, or until hot throughout. Transfer to individual plates and serve immediately.
Total Time: 26 minutes
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 11 minutes
4 Servings
Alternate plating shown. Orange segments chopped, cooked with seafood and all served over rice.

There Is Nothing Better Than Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
Juice Oranges might not be perfect or beautiful on the outside, but it's really what's on the inside that counts. Cartons can be purchased by a 20lb box or a 40lb box.
Why make your own fresh squeezed orange juice?
What happens with Industrially-produced orange juice, is after the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed from them. This allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. This makes the juice completely flavorless. Then the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice.
Fresh squeezed orange juice can be a good source of vitamins and other nutrients. Squeezing your own at home would be about the only way to get the real flavor and these nutrients.
40lb Carton Sunburst Juice Oranges perfect for home juicing.
Carton contains approx. 80-113 oranges $20.00
20lb Carton Sunburst Juice Oranges perfect for home juicing.
Carton contains approx. 40-56 oranges $10.00

Can your eyesight be improved naturally?
There are more than 25 million people worldwide who are affected by age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, which according to the American Optometric Association is the leading cause of blindness in people over age 55. These diseases are often caused by oxidation and inflammation of the eyes, but research has found that foods rich in the nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases. Other studies have found that a diet rich in vitamins C and E, beta carotene, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids can also prevent age-related eye diseases. Here is a list of the five top sources you should start eating now to improve eyesight.
