Fukumoto Navel Oranges
In 1983, Dr. W.P. Bitters requested from the USDA a sample of the Fukumoto Navel Orange from Japan be delivered and added to the UC Riverside “Citrus Variety Collection”. Dr. Bitters was one of the stalwarts in the pathological development of the citrus industry in California. He described the Fukumoto “as the best appearing navel in a Japanese produce display” and requested the sample be sent and included in the clonal program.
The farmer, S. Fukumoto, from Kokawa-cho in Japan was the first to grow this orange in the Wakayama Prefecture. The Fukumoto Navel is one of the earliest maturing Navel oranges and one of the first Navels to “break” color.
Our medium box will contain 15 to 18 pieces of fruit. The quantity depends on individual fruit size and size is determined by the climatic conditions for the season. $ 22.50

Sunburst Oranges Hand Picked and Hand Sorted
It seems that Plucky isn’t the only one visiting relatives this week. This lovely young lady is at Sunburst Packing visiting her Godfather who is our packaging manager. She was very interested to see what her Godfather did at work.
That is why we like to say, Fresh, handpicked, from our farm to your table.
We really do hand pick our all of our citrus and then we hand sort them as well. You can see this happening with Lemons on our YouTube channel.
http://youtu.be/4-IwcIufayo
Andrea has a great smile and loves our fresh citrus as an after school snack. You can’t get it any fresher unless you stand by the orange tree and pick from there.
From our house to yours... Hand-picked & Hand-made Goodness Year-round
We take great pride in our family history and the dedicated staff that helps us bring you, the customer, nature’s bounty.
Like our trees the history of Sunburst Oranges runs deep. From the time he was born, our President and CEO, Jim Reed, was raised as a farmer and encouraged to be an innovator. But it comes as no surprise when you realize farming and his “interest in progress” is in his DNA.
Jim’s Great-Great-Grandfather, Harmon Talley Reed, was born in 1838, and after the Civil War he was digging water well on his farm in Ohio and struck oil instead. “He made money from oil, sold the oil wells and invested in Iowa farmland.” Harmon did quite well with his farming pursuit and by 1872, was the owner of a great deal of land. He owned land on which he laid out the township of Monteith, Iowa when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific went through in 1881.
The family moved to the Grand Valley, near Palisade, Colorado, where Harmon had peach orchards. He was influential in getting irrigation started, and was director of a bank. Later they moved to California where he developed lemon orchards at Whittier.
Harmon and wife, Louisa, moved and finally rooted in southern California. Great-Great Grandfather Reed planted lemon orchards in Whittier and thus began the "citrus roots" of the family tradition.
We hope you enjoyed this relative visit with us today and will come back again and again, either to our blog, website or our Facebook page. The links are in the right hand column near the top.

Sunburst Oranges Plucky Visits Relatives
Or should we say that Plucky is visiting his California Cousins? There are many types of Navel oranges and they are grown in many places.
The original navel orange was the result of the mutation of a common sweet orange growing in an orchard at a monastery in Brazil in 1820. A cutting from that tree was sent to Washington, D.C., in 1870 for propagation. As a result, the original navel orange variety came to be called the Washington navel orange.
In the late nineteenth century, Washington navel oranges were distributed around the United States for general cultivation. They were so well suited for the California climate that they spawned the California citrus industry. The navel orange is the most commonly grown orange in California today.
The Washington navel orange ripens from fall into winter, and the fruit will keep on the tree for 3 to 4 months. Other navel orange varieties are sports or mutations of the original Washington. When plant mutations result in desirable traits, they are often developed by growers into separate varieties.
Navel oranges are amongst some of the most prized oranges available. They have a long growing season and are juicy and delicious. Their thick skin allows for great zesting, which means grating the peel. Many culinary applications call for orange or other citrus zest, and the more peel you get, the better the chance of you flavoring your dish properly. The thick peel also means less of the bitter white pith underneath when you zest an orange, which could ruin the taste of your dish.
Though most just think of navel oranges generically, the truth is that they are actually quite diverse in size. In fact, not only are there small, medium and large navel oranges available (depending on the growing season and what time of year we are talking about), there are also two different varieties of navel oranges.
Here is a list of a few of Plucky’s relatives:
Cara Cara: (sometimes called Red Navel) a navel orange with a flavorful, juicy pink flesh. Cara Cara is sweet and mildly acidic. Its flavor is reminiscent of strawberries and raspberries.
Fukumoto: a sweet and juicy navel with a reddish-orange rind. This is a medium-sized orange that ripens about one week before the Washington.
Lane Late: similar to the Washington but has a smaller navel and smoother skin. This variety was discovered in Australia in 1950. Lane Late ripens 4 to 6 weeks later than the Washington. The Lane Late is sometimes called a summer navel.
Riverside: this navel orange is the original Washington navel orange by a different name. A cutting of the Washington was sent to Riverside, California in 1870. This was the Washington orange that started commercial orange growing in California. (Bahai is yet another name for the Washington and Riverside navel orange. Bahia is the region of Brazil where the original Washington was discovered.)
Robertson: has medium-large fruit just like the Washington but this variety ripens 2 to 3 weeks earlier than the Washington. The Robertson, which is moderately juicy, bears its fruit in clusters.
Skaggs Bonanza: is a medium-large to large navel orange that bears more fruit than the Washington and ripens 2 weeks earlier. Skaggs Bonanza has a rich and sweet flavor and is moderately juicy

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... In the case of citrus, taste preferences for certain varieties is as varied as the many selections available within the general groupings. Although certain characteristics are documented for each variety, where and how that variety has been grown and under what particular set of climatic and agricultural conditions, will ultimately determine each consumer’s definition of their favorite citrus variety.
In citrus, as with most other fruits, a horticultural variety traces back to a single parent tree or individual mutant branch, now called a ‘clone’. Citrus varieties or cultivars are therefore clonal varieties.
Foregoing the thousands of pages of research on citrus clonal varieties, we will highlight the properties of several varieties we offer to our customers with a bit of insight we have accumulated from either growing them ourselves or being directly involved in their production.

Bonanza Navel Oranges – Medium Box
In the Early 1980’s, John Walker found a “limb sport” in a Navel citrus tree in a grove in Lindsay California. This branch of a Bonanza Navel was growing oranges with extremely smooth-skin and very sweet fruit that was maturing particularly early in the season. Through the courtesy of the grove owner, Mr. Skaggs, a cutting or “cultivar” was placed into the Citrus Clonal program.
Many of the specialty strains of the varieties of citrus have been discovered in this method. Citrus can produce a slightly different branch of fruit, on the same tree, and then propagate that new fruit, thus creating the variations.
Depending on the conditions Mother Nature gives us each year determines the size and number of oranges in each box. Regardless of her decisions, the medium box will hold 15 to 18 beautiful oranges. $ 22.50

Sunburst Oranges Says - Navels Are Almost Ready, What A Sweet Treat
California navel oranges usually arrive around very late October or early November and go through spring. The earliest ones have lighter orange color. As the season progresses and in the peak months, California navels get very sweet. Late in the season they are likely to be more expensive.
People understand that fresh oranges are best in the winter, but not many people understand that different varieties have particular seasons. You'll have better luck coming home with good oranges if you learn which varieties are in season when - and keep a simple guideline in mind when you're selecting them at the market.
Oranges and all citrus fruit should be heavy in the hand for its size. This simple test and it's your most reliable guide for citrus fruit.
There’s nothing quite like a sweet and juicy Navel Orange from Sunburst Oranges. What a wonderfully satisfying, classic snack! No seeds. Bright orange skin that is not too difficult to peel, section and share.
Great healthy fruit! It is an easy to love flavor during the cold months that whisks your taste buds away to the sunny citrus groves of the San Joaquin Valley in California.
Right now, Sunburst Oranges is getting ready to ship our very tasty Bonanza Navel variety. Navels have a firm skin and high sugar content they can even handle a short freeze. Still, there may be some change to the late Winter crop that will be assessed as the season progresses. In the meantime – enjoy this juicy in-season fruit!
Navel California navel oranges are considered by many to be the best oranges in the world for eating out of hand. They have a meaty flesh, their thick rinds are easy to peel, the segments separate easily, and they have no seeds. All navel oranges have a navel at the blossom end - an opening with a convoluted interior that looks, you know, like a navel.
In season organic and conventional California Navel Oranges are beginning to taste their juicy, flavorful best – a balance of sweetness and acidity. The flavor will get even sweeter over the next couple of months.
Some have a very small navel; others have a larger one. If you're in doubt, inspect several in the bin. A quick look can usually identify the variety.
Oranges can be kept out at room temperature for three or four days with little problem. Refrigerate them in a plastic bag or in the crisper drawer, and they'll keep well for one to two weeks.

Sunburst Oranges – Think Donating Your Excess To Food Banks
Do you grow
fruits and vegetables on your home property? Many of us do. Do you find your
trees and plants produce more than you can use yourself.
At the peak of
your harvest season do you find that your surplus goes to waste? Or, are your
neighbors and coworkers calling you the crazy fruit lady?
I know many
neighbors appreciate getting fresh fruits and vegetables from local gardens.
Fresh is so much better than what you find at the typical grocery store.
Excess fruits
and produce from your trees and garden can be donated to a local food bank.
More than 40
million gardeners across America grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and nuts in
backyard, terrace, kitchen and community gardens. Some even have orchards or
small farms. Many end up growing more than they can use, preserve or give to co-workers
and friends.
At the same
time, tens of millions of Americans struggling to feed their families can't get
fresh produce from the local food pantry.
It doesn't have
to be this way.
If you are
growing more food than you can use, AmpleHarvest.org can help you find a local
food bank that would be eager to accept your abundance.
An estimated 100
billion pounds of food (including oranges), enough to totally eliminate hunger,
is thrown away annually in the United States.
Join the
millions of gardeners across the country using AmpleHarvest.org to share their
bounty with their neighbors in need.
One out of six
Americans needs food assistance, but can't get fresh produce from the local
food pantry, while, millions of American homeowners grow more food in their
backyard gardens than they can possibly use.
The ampleharvest.org
campaign is a national effort utilizing the Internet that enables 40+ million
Americans who grow fruits and vegetables in home gardens to easily donate their
excess harvest to registered local food pantries spread across all 50 states.
Surplus oranges
from your garden will be greatly appreciated by your local food bank.

Sunburst Oranges - Oranges as Jack O'Lanterns
Are you a fan of scary Halloween decorations? What we have here today cannot be called scary but it leads to great decorations for children and you have tasty holiday treats as well.
Orange is my favorite color but being scary isn’t my favorite thing to do. So, I like to decorate with fall themed items rather than going the scary-witchy route. But I really do love the smell of citrus based fragrances. So here is a way to combine the Halloween “scary-ness” with the natural scents of oranges. You can even add your favorite fall spices.
Making your very own Orange Jack O'Lanterns
Began by cutting a “lid” from the orange about 3/4″ from the top.
Scoop out the orange and set aside for making fresh squeezed orange juice. Take a star shaped metal cookie cutter that is smaller than the circumference of the lid and firmly press to cut out a shape in the center of the lid.
Scoop out the orange from the inside using a spoon. Now you are ready to make your face!
These oranges are so much easier to carve than a big hard pumpkin. Make all of your own Jack O Lanterns with a big smile. I told you I don’t do scary.
Now put about two tablespoons of whole Allspice inside and push a tea light candle into the center of the spices. You can also use whole cloves for this and smell the house up like a very fresh pumpkin pie!
Put your lid back on top and let it burn. Soon you will smell the pleasant aroma of spices and orange. Very neat. These little votive candles will last as long as the candle does and you can replace the candle several times before the orange finally gives out. After you have used yours about three days you can put the rinds outside for the birds to enjoy.
You can also paint great fall and Halloween based images on your orange Jack O Lanterns. Now painting images doesn’t have to mean getting out paint and brushes. You can do your Halloween images with a simple Sharpie.
Take advantage of the festive color of oranges and incorporate them into your Halloween decorations. Get creative with painting for orange jack-o-lanterns that will brighten any dark and haunted table. After all orange and black are traditional Halloween colors.
1. Paint your favorite Halloween shapes such as jack-o-lantern faces, witches hats, black cats or bats on the surface of your oranges, directly on the peel.
2. Allow the paint to dry for 4 hours.
3. Tie ribbons or strings around your oranges before adding them to your decorations.

Sunburst Oranges Begins Thinking Navel Oranges For This Fall
I don’t know about you but Navel Oranges are my favorite among oranges. The great news is that Navel Orange harvesting will be begin in just about four to five weeks.
If you are new to healthy eating and you have pledged to eating more fruits you can’t do any better than eating navel oranges.
There are numerous health benefits to navel oranges, and these go beyond just the obvious. The obvious and most well-know benefit of navel oranges is of course Vitamin C. This is arguably the most well-known benefit because navel oranges are a citrus fruit, and every citrus fruit has some kind of Vitamin C content to it. Though the amount of C content can vary amongst all the citrus fruits, the amount in navel oranges is definitely high. But again, this is not the only benefit of navel oranges, just the most obvious.
Another great health benefit of navel oranges is beta carotene. This is an antioxidant that helps prevent and repair cell damage. This cell damage can be due to any number of things like illness or free radicals, which are everywhere and which the body also naturally produces free radicals as a byproduct of digestion. Getting rid of these using the beta carotene in navel oranges can greatly improve your health and vitality.
Most dieticians will tell you that it is better to get these vitamins and minerals out of your food rather than a pill. And since navel oranges are low in calories, fat and cholesterol free and high in fiber and other nutrients, it is a good way to get your daily dosage of these things. It is also juicy and delicious, and available all through the winter.
What is better than a sweet and delicious citrus fruit like navel oranges to get you through the chilly fall and icy winter? They will remind you of spring and summer even as the snow outside is gathering. Indeed, navel oranges can make you appreciate the sun of spring and heat of summer that much more when they return.
Calcium is another benefit of navel oranges that you may not have thought of. Often, you can find calcium enhanced juices in the dairy case, but many times if you eat a varied diet and consume navel oranges, you may not need that extra calcium. The rest is simply extra that will go unprocessed by your body.
In the store choose oranges that have smoothly textured skin and are firm and heavy for their size. These will have a higher juice content than those that are either spongy or lighter in weight. In general, oranges that are smaller will be juicier than those that are larger in size, as will those that feature thinner skins. Of course you can let Sunburst Oranges choose the very best for you. We will have Navels in just a few weeks.

Pomegranates and Your Health
Colorful and delicious the Pomegranate fruit packs a powerful antioxidant punch.
While you can buy pomegranate juice in bottles at your friendly neighborhood grocery store. It's rather pricey, in terms of both the green stuff and calories, so you might want to mix it with mineral or seltzer water to make it go further.
Why should you give pomegranate juice a second look?
It has a unique, pleasant flavor.
The color is amazing. It can add a splash of red to your beverages, smoothies, and other recipes.
Pomegranates are a rich source of antioxidants.
Antioxidants in pomegranates include polyphenols, such as tannins and anthocyanins. In fact, pomegranates may have even more antioxidant power than cranberry juice or green tea.
You might even compare and think of Pomegranates as the new red blueberry.
As for other possible health benefits, while more studies are needed, there are indications that:
Pomegranate juice may improve blood flow to the heart in people with ischemic coronary heart disease (CHD). In a study of 45 people with CHD and myocardial ischemia (in which not enough blood gets to the heart muscle), participants who drank about 8 fluid ounces of pomegranate juice daily for 3 months had less ischemia during a stress test.
Study participants who did not drink the juice, meanwhile, had evidence of more stress-induced ischemia. The study noted no negative effects to drinking pomegranate juice (even on blood sugar levels or body weight). Lead researcher, Dean Ornish, MD, believes pomegranate juice may even be able to help prevent heart disease in people who do not already have it.
Pomegranate juice may help stop plaque from building up in blood vessels - in other words, it may have an anti-atherogenic effect. The antioxidants in the juice may help keep cholesterol in a form that is less damaging, and may also reduce plaque that has already built up in vessels, according to Collins.
Pomegranate juice was shown to have potent anti-atherogenic effects in healthy humans and in mice with plaque buildup -- possibly due to its antioxidative properties, researchers from Israel recently concluded. In their study of healthy male volunteers, pomegranate juice was shown to decrease the likelihood of LDL "bad" cholesterol to form plaque. Another Israeli study showed a decrease in the development of atherosclerosis in mice whose diets were supplemented with pomegranate juice.

Sunburst Oranges and Fun Facts About Pomegranates Fruits
The delightful Pomegranate is one of the fruits that is one that people either love or hate (or a least they don’t want to stain their hands). If you are one of the fans you can get your fill of this luscious fruit from Sunburst Oranges. From our land to your hands…
The pomegranate originated somewhere between Iran and the Himalayas of northern India. It has been grown and cultivated across Mediterranean Europe, Asia, and Africa since ancient times. Ancient Egyptian art and mythology featured the pomegranate. The fruit is found to be mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible and the Babylonian Talmud. The pomegranate was carried across deserts by caravans because of its thirst-quenching juice. It has been widely cultivated throughout India, China, Egypt and the Middle East.
How to Eat a Pomegranate
1. Cut off the crown end of the pomegranate
2. Lightly score the rind in several places.
3. Hold fruit under a bowl of water and break sections apart, separating seeds from membrane. Seeds will sink while rind and membrane float.
4. Remove rind and pith from water and discard
5. Pour seeds into a colander, drain, and pat dry.
6. Enjoy!
Fun Pomegranate Facts
▪ A ripe Pomegranate will make a metallic sound when tapped
▪ An average pomegranate contains hundreds of edible seeds
▪ Pomegranate trees only bear fruit in hot, dry climates

Sunburst Oranges Has Sunburst Orange Blossom Honey!
Just like eating Sunburst Oranges, eating our Sunburst Orange Blossom Honey has many beneficial properties.
The healing powers of honey have been used for centuries, but you might be surprised how many health benefits you can get from this kitchen staple. This golden liquid has been shown to help fix ailments ranging from a pesky cough to a painful wound.
However, children under the age of one should never consume honey, raw or pasteurized.
Did you know that the ancient Egyptians not only made offerings of honey to their gods, they also used it as an embalming fluid and a dressing for wounds? On that last point, at least, they were on to something.
Today, many people swarm (pun intended) to honey for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Holistic practitioners consider it one of nature's best all-around remedies.
Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. This has now been verified with modern studies, showing that it is superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery time than other sweeteners.
Even the Bible has a direct reference to honey. “My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:” — King Solomon – Proverbs: 24:13
In the laboratory, honey has been shown to hamper the growth of food-borne pathogens such as E. coli and salmonella, and to fight certain bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, both of which are common in hospitals and doctors' offices.
Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis.
When shopping for honey and you'll see that some are lighter, others are darker. In general, the darker the honey, the more antibacterial and antioxidant power it has.
Honey helps with coughs. In a study of 110 children, a single dose of honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough and allowing proper sleep.
Pure, California Honey created in the Orange Blossoms of the San Joaquin Valley.
