Impress your friends with this cake. An orange chiffon cake has that wonderful light and spongy texture. Serve on a cake plate decorated with orange twists and topped with orange zest for an elegant looking cake.
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
5 egg yolks
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon orange zest
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup egg whites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Glaze:
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1 pound confectioners' sugar, sifted
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Wash angel food tube pan in hot soapy water to ensure it is totally grease free.
Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together into bowl. Make a well in center. Put egg yolks, cooking oil, orange juice, orange rind, and vanilla into well. Set aside. Don't beat yet.
In a large bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar in mixing bowl until very stiff. Set aside.
Using same beaters, beat egg yolk-flour mixture until smooth. Gently fold 1/4 at a time into egg whites. Pour batter into ungreased 10 inch angel food tube pan.
Bake in oven for 60 to 70 minutes, until an inserted wooden pick comes out clean. Invert pan until cake has cooled. Remove from pan.
Make glaze: Stir juice into sugar; drizzle over top of cake and down sides.

Ryman Ali Little
Ryman Ali Little was born on April 24th, 2013. Parents, Brandy & Jeremy Little, were preparing to leave the hospital and take Ryman home on April 26th but Ryman’s nurse had been concerned about her not being as alert and not wanting to eat. The NICU doctor at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee expected a metabolic disorder, so baby Ryman was transferred to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Ryman was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder called CPS-1 (a UREA Cycle disorder) and as a result of this problem Ryman would need a liver transplant. Due to the very little amount of protein that her liver could break down she continued to have high ammonia levels and remained under the care of the doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital until she was transferred to Washington DC, Children’s National Medical Center on the 12th day of her life. Ryman was under the care of the genetics team at Children’s until she received a liver transplant on August 30, 2013 from her donor angel at Georgetown University Hospital.
Five days after her first transplant it was discovered that her hepatic artery had clotted and had caused permanent damage to that liver. She was placed back on the transplant list and received her second liver transplant from another donor angel on September 18, 2013.
Six months post her second liver transplant she is home in Nashville and is doing great!

Great Household Uses For Oranges
Clean Cookware
Boil orange rinds in a pan that has burnt on stuff food to it. Let it sit for at least an hour to soak in, and clean the grime right off!
Mosquito Repellent
Rub fresh orange or lemon peels over your exposed skin to keep mosquitoes away. It’s said that mosquitoes and gnats are totally repulsed by citrus scent.
Make Your House Smell Wonderful
Cut up peels. In a saucepan add peels, 1 cinnamon stick, a few cloves and fill to the top with water. Simmer for a nice simmering potpourri.
Easy Scrub for Cast Iron Pans
Half an orange with some coffee grounds poured into it makes a great scrubber for a cast iron pan! The peel helps to protect your hand from the coffee grounds (which are an excellent abrasive), as well as adding citrus cleaning power. Then just toss all in your compost.
Refresh Your Garbage Disposal
Keep orange peels in a jar or bowl under your sink. After they dry, periodically put them down the garbage disposal – helps clean blades & smells wonderful.
Help Relieve Your Migraines
Boil the orange peels and let steep for 10 minutes. Drink as a tea to get rid of migraines.
Clean the Microwave
Place orange peels in a bowl of water and microwave for about five minutes. Then wipe the microwave clean with a sponge.
Clean Your Cutting Board
Rub the empty peel across your cutting board to deodorize.
Keep Kitties Off Your Lawn
Make a mixture of orange peels and coffee grounds and distribute it around where the cats hangout. If the problem persists, put down a second batch and moisten it with water.

Sunburst Oranges Looks For A Few Good Men
Like the Marine Corps. We are looking “For A Few Good Men.” We are actually “Looking For A Few Good Bloggers” and in point of fact most of them are females.
If you write a popular blog, then you are a perfect candidate. Do you write about food, food related products or products that unique and tasty gifts? If you do, Sunburst Oranges would like to hear from you. kristen@sunburstpacking.com Visit our Web Site: http://sunburstoranges.com
If you’ve got an audience looking for natural, healthy products, Sunburst Oranges can make great blog posts. Our products are natural and some are relatively unknown in mass markets, so they’re exciting for people to learn and talk about. If your readers would enjoy hearing from you about Sunburst Oranges, chocolate, jams, marmalades and honey we’re happy to help support your blog.
Here’s How It Works
Sunburst Oranges isn’t a one-size-fits-all company, so we’ll ask about your blog, of course, but also a little bit about you. You’ll get the most out of the relationship if you’re a Sunburst Oranges kind of person–someone who believes nature has it right, whose readers appreciate you because you’re real. We’ll try to understand your blog and not make you do things like everyone else, because you’re probably not like everyone else. (Unless you’re the only person out there who really is like everyone else, which I guess is logically impossible…)
Product Reviews
In some cases it might make sense for us to send you one of our products in what we call our “idea box.” The idea is for you to use the products and review them for your readers. Ingredients
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/3 cup chopped pecans
12 (3/4 inch thick) slices French bread

California Citrus GiftPacks from Sunburst Oranges
Let me ask, if a cool glass of fresh squeezed orange juice over ice would taste wonderful right now? Our Citrus Giftpacks are a delightful way to get our fresh California oranges delivered right to your home or office year round. And as their name would suggest they also make very welcome gifts for business associates, family or friends.
We have several types and sizes of gift packs on our website sunburstoranges.com. If we don’t have exactly what you are looking for please give us a call at 559-561-3391 and we can see if we can help fill your needs.
As we say on the web site - Sunburst Oranges, Your source for everything citrus & delicious. Hand-Picked, Hand-Made, Goodness Year-Round!
Why make your own fresh squeezed orange juice?
What happens with Industrially-produced orange juice, is after the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed from them. This allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. This also makes the juice completely flavorless. Then the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice.
Fresh squeezed orange juice can be a good source of vitamins and other nutrients. Squeezing your own at home would be about the only way to get the real flavor and these nutrients.
An 8 ounce glass of fresh squeezed has just one-hundred-twelve calories and only 1% fat content. By nature it will have 0% Cholesterol and Sodium content. The Dietary Fiber will vary as the squeezing method will affect the amount of pulp content in the glass.
By contrast you may find that your “Orange Drink” can be as much as 448 calories in an 8 ounce glass. Not everything that is orange is good for you.
Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Oranges are generally available from winter through summer with seasonal variations depending on the variety.
Oranges are round citrus fruits with finely-textured skins that are, of course, orange in color just like their pulpy flesh; the skin can vary in thickness from very thin to very thick. Oranges usually range from approximately two to three inches in diameter.
Our California Citrus GiftPacks are chock full of nature’s bounty. Think of us as your nationwide farmers market for oranges.
Are you looking for the perfect citrus gift packs for business associates, family or friends? A quick visit to sunburstoranges.com can solve all of your fresh giftpack giving adventures. We sell only the finest selections and the freshest California citrus you can buy.

Sunburst Oranges Remembers 9/11
What triggered
your memory that today was different than any other day? Was it a news story?
Did you look at the calendar and see that today, Thursday September 11th,
2014, was the thirteenth anniversary of the attack by the Islamic terrorist
group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City, Washington, D.C. and in
a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
On that day, a
Tuesday, more than 2,977 victims perished as the result of terrorist attacks on
the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and what was thought to be the White House
by the plane that the heroic passengers fought to regain and was forcibly
crashed by the highjackers. These events caused at least $10 billion in
property and infrastructure damage.
Four passenger
airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists so they could be flown into
buildings in the cowardly attacks. Two of those planes, American Airlines
Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South
towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City.
Within two
hours, both towers collapsed with debris and the resulting fires causing
partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the WTC complex, as well
as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures.
A third plane,
American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of
the United States Department of Defense), leading to a partial collapse in its
western side.
The fourth
plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C., but crashed
into a field in Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to valiantly overcome
the hijackers.
The destruction
of the Twin Towers and other properties caused serious damage to the economy of
Lower Manhattan and had a significant effect on global markets, closing Wall
Street until September 17 and the civilian airspace in the U.S. and Canada
until September 13.
Many closings,
evacuations, and cancellations followed the attack, either out of fear of further
attacks or respect for the tragedy. Cleanup of the World Trade Center site was
completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was repaired within a year. Numerous
memorials have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial
& Museum in New York, the Pentagon Memorial, and the Flight 93 National
Memorial in Pennsylvania.
For many of us
the events of 9/11 are seared into our memory. Are you old enough to remember
those horrific events?
The skyline of
New York City and the collective consciousness of the world changed that day
and the future was forever altered.
"The
attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have
emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles
of political, economic and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for
human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in
freedom." -- Rudolph W. Giuliani

Sunburst Oranges: Orange Carrot Cookies
Orange Carrot Cookies
Makes 3 dozen
Prep time - 20 mins Cook time - 15 mins
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups shortening
2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups mashed cooked carrots
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 Sunburst orange, zested and juiced
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla and carrots. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually stir into the creamed mixture. Finally, fold in the walnuts. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheet.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until lightly golden. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
To make the glaze, put 1 cup of the confectioners' sugar into a medium bowl. Grate the rind of the orange into the bowl with the sugar. Squeeze in enough juice from the orange to form a thin but spreadable consistency. Mix until smooth. If necessary, stir in more confectioners' sugar. Spread onto the cooled cookies. Store in an airtight container.

Sunburst Oranges DIY Oranges and Tea Light Candles
If you love doing special accents for your home as the seasons change we have an idea that you can apply in many different ways to add lighted accents and a wonderful orange aroma to your home.
We used a navel orange for this example.
Directions:
1. Refrigerate the orange overnight (makes the following steps easier)
2. Cut the orange in half.
3. The bottom is the end opposite the navel.
4. Scoop out the orange meat with a spoon with a thin edge. (the sharper, the better)
5. Enjoy the fresh cold orange as a great snack!
6. On the top half (navel end) use the side of a table knife to scrape the pith away from the orange so the thickness is reduced. This makes the light show through even better.
7. Depending on the shape of the orange you may need to cut the bottom so that it sets flat and stable.
8. You can cut a pattern of holes in the top so the candlelight shows through these openings.
9. If you don’t do the holes in the top cut two holes (at the top edge of the rim) in the back side on the bottom for proper air flow.
Lighting your orange candle:
You can use a tea light (the simplest and safer method) or candle oil (not kerosene and unscented) with a separate wick as the source of light. We used a basic tea light candle for our example.
If you plan to use candle oil test to see if the lower half will hold water without leaking. After your lower half passes the “holding water” test fill it so that it is less than half full of the candle oil. Place a candle wick into the oil and allow it to season a few hours before lightening. That allows the oil to soak the wick. Place your candle on a safe fire proof and stable surface. Never leave a candle unattended!
The better (and read much safer) way is to use a tea light candle placed in the lower half. Once you see how this works try different patterns to the openings. You can use various images cut into the top. If you want to get really creative you can draw patterns first and just cut along the lines.
Enjoy these pretty, aromatic lights for special fall season decorations and wonderful party lights and accents!
When you are done with them cut the orange peels into small sections to clean and deodorize your garbage disposal.

Sunburst Oranges Asks Do You Know How or Where Your Food Is Grown?
"Do you know where your children are?" is a popular question used as a public service announcement for parents on American television. Its heyday was throughout the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, but has made a comeback as of late. The question is usually asked around 10:00PM or 11:00PM, depending on the market and/or the time of the local youth curfew, usually before the station's evening newscast. The phrase originated from Buffalo, New York's long time ABC affiliate WKBW, and was possibly inspired by a Scottish bedtime story.
Today, perhaps, an equally important (from a family health point-of-view) question just might be, “Do you know how your food is grown?” It seems that hardly a week goes by and we see a news story about contaminated food being recalled from our grocery stores.
Do you ever wonder how much contaminate foods slip by and we never get to be warned by a news story. Sometimes the contamination is from a pathogen. You almost never hear a news story that your food is covered in questionable pesticides. We know that many folks drink bottled water to protect themselves and their family from the trace elements that our in our municipal water supplies.
The standard levels of “acceptable” contaminations and biological burdens are “safe” or so the story goes from government bodies that are meant to keep us safe. Many times these standard levels are adjusted downward as we learn more about long term effects of exposure to industrial chemicals and other “acceptable” adulterants.
We see the word “organic” on many food items in our stores. That is put there to make the consumer feel safer when buying those products. Since no one governs the use of that “organic” label what does it actually mean? Are products labeled “organic safer than products without that buzz word?
Oranges from Brazil (and other countries) can be sprayed with pesticides that are illegal to use in the United States. Food contamination refers to the presence in food of harmful chemicals. Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels and tolerable concentrations of contaminants are something most consumers don't know about.
Some areas to consider are:
Air: radionuclides (137Caesium, 90Strontium), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)
Water: arsenic, mercury
Soil: cadmium, nitrates, perchlorates
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), dioxins, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are ubiquitous chemicals
Packaging Materials: antimony, tin, lead, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), semicarbazide, benzophenone, isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX), bisphenol A
Processing/cooking equipment: aluminum, copper, or other metal contaminates, lubricants, cleaning, and sanitizing agents
Naturally occurring toxins: mycotoxins, phytohaemagglutinin, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, grayanotoxin, mushroom toxins, scombrotoxin (histamine), ciguatera, shellfish toxins (see shellfish poisoning), tetrodotoxin, among many others.
While many folks have begun buying at farmer’s Markets they are no guarantee that their food id completely safe.

Sunburst Juice Oranges
Juice Oranges might not be perfect or beautiful on the outside, but it's really what's on the inside that counts. Cartons can be purchased by a 20lb box or a 40lb box.
Why make your own fresh squeezed orange juice?
What happens with Industrially-produced orange juice, is after the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed from them. This allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. This makes the juice completely flavorless. Then the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice.
Fresh squeezed orange juice can be a good source of vitamins and other nutrients. Squeezing your own at home would be about the only way to get the real flavor and these nutrients.
40lb Carton Sunburst Juice Oranges perfect for home juicing.
Carton contains approx. 80-113 oranges $20.00
20lb Carton Sunburst Juice Oranges perfect for home juicing.
Carton contains approx. 40-56 oranges $10.00

Is Orange Juice Packaging The Ultimate Science Project?
If you want the taste of fresh squeezed orange juice you need to squeeze your own oranges. If you think that isn’t true, please read on.
No matter what the bottle says, no matter what the hype you read or watch in the TV ads, the bottled orange juice is as much as a year old and is very much an industrial product. After being processed and stored (a much as and even more than a year) “Flavor Packs” are added to put a signature “Taste” back into the off the shelf product.
The buzzed words used on the packaging and the promotional ads are carefully chosen to reassure the buyer that they are getting a wholesome, fresh product. The carefully chosen “weasel” words don’t reflect the reality of the product.
No, we aren’t saying they are out-and-out lying. They are just pulling the wool over your eyes so that you can’t see the truth. Basically, all of the customer base is realizing that too much of sodas are really bad for you, so consumer demand is shifting to healthy -- or at least healthy-seeming -- alternatives like fruit (orange) juice.
A recent investigation by Bloomberg Businessweek shows that the Simply Orange orange juice brand that's billed as less processed version of Tropicana is in fact a hyper-engineered and dauntingly industrial product. The factory in Florida where the bulk of these orange juice products are made sounds less like a bucolic grove where natural things grow than an oil refinery where natural things go to die.
To make sure they have plenty of product for year round deliver the company sucks the oxygen out of the juice when they send it to be mixed so that they can keep it around for a year or more to balance it out with other batches. Built into the model is a breakdown of the 600-plus flavors that are in orange juice that are tweaked throughout the year to keep flavor consistent and in line with consumer tastes.
What the consumer must learn is that in the U.S. most all companies process our food that is sold a typical grocery store chain. And just because consumers have been catching on to this fresh and natural trend the past couple of decades, that doesn't mean that the food and beverage industry is going to throw out the old ways of doing things. Especially, when there are billions of sales dollars on the line.
While the phrase “not from concentrate” may be somewhat accurate it hides the real fact that the orange juice in that bottle may just be an industrial product that is closer to the way oil is refined than it is to image conjured up by the advertising phrase “fresh squeezed orange juice”.
At Sunburst Oranges we know what “Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice” should mean.

Sunburst Oranges Presents Giant Orange Stands in California
There were giant oranges lurking along many of the highways throughout California. These giant oranges operated as juice stands, eagerly awaiting thirsty travelers to pull over and partake of their fresh cold orange juice. At a time when most cars didn't have air conditioning and the highways were not the freeways with on and off ramps of today, the orange stands did a busy and successful business.
In 1926 Frank E. Pohl started his chain of "Giant Orange" stands opening up their frist orange shaped stand at 11th Street near E Street in Tracy. Before trying out orange juice stands, Pohl had a giant lemon from which he served lemonade in Menlo Park called Jumbo Lemon Stand. But his first "Giant Orange" was in Tracy, California and spawned a franchise and imitations throughout California.
The franchise peaked in the 1950's with approximately 16 different stands built throughout Northern California from Bakersfield to Sacramento to Merced and Redding. It's rumored that a stand could easily go through six thousand oranges during a week as it quenched the thirst of weary travelers who pulled over for a quick drink.
There were giant oranges in at least Tracy, Dixon, Bakersfield, Tulare, Madera, Chowhcilla, Merced, Turlock, Redding, Galt, Roseville, Sacramento, El Dorado, Banta, Vacaville, Modesto, Lodi, Williams, Patterson, and Placerville. And some of those cities such as Tracy and Dixon had two of the giant orange stands.
After the 1950's the stands began to decline as by-ways were converted to high speed motorways which made it more difficult to pull off and stop for just a glass of orange juice, no matter how refreshing it was. This combined with the emergence of air conditioning in cars, the decline of the giant orange juice stands began.
There are still at least two of the Pohl's sixteen original orange stand buildings remaining. The first stands in Dixon, California and is operating as a Mexican restaurant. Called George's Orange, it is now part of Mr. Taco. So the fate of the giant orange is currently unclear. However, it was operated as an orange juice stand until July 15th, 1973 and was the last of the giant orange stands to remain in business as an orange juice stand.
The last orange stand that remained was in San Jose. Since 1947, the orange was utilized by Mark's Hot Dogs. Mark's Hot Dogs originally opened in 1936 and relocated to the orange in 1947. The orange was also constructed in 1936, was placed on the original Alum Rock Avenue site in 1947 when Mark's Hot Dogs moved into it, and it became a city landmark in 1992. Mark’s now operates out of a new orange shaped building at 48 S Capital Street.
